So we have planned the next and last trip to the BVIs. We leave at the end of June for July 4th week, and we are taking the family this time for their first adventure on Tranquility. This time we are going to make an early morning sail to Anagada and then back to St John in the US Virgin Islands. This will be the last trip here for a while as we intend to sail to Puerto Rico over Christmas. Have read rave reviews about the island of Puerto Rico and looking forward to some spanish culture and practicing our spanish skills again. In the mean time, we are busy reading lots of books about people adventuring around the world by sail. Just finished Blue Horizons : Dispatches from Distant Seas. lots of ideas for ... read more

Day 12 - Saturday.- 26 SEPT I was the first one up this morning. I packed my gear and folded up the rollaway bed. I knew I had 500-600 miles to travel today so I wanted to get going early. In the process of quietly getting my gear to the door when the dogs woke up Lena. I wasn’t going to leave before they got up, but I figured that I could pack my gear on the bike while they still slept. Karl went up to bring Effie down the hill from the shop, I had told him I had been too unsure to get it off the table last night. Karl comes back from the shop and says that there is no power to the ignition. We decide not going to mess with it until ... read more

We decided to try some two lane highways instead of the usual interstates, mainly the 90 and the 80, when traveling from Billings MT to Novato CA and back. We headed out west on the 90 just to get a running start, then down Hwy 191 through the Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone, famous for its wide streets, the better to push the snow around in the winter. Hwy 20 out of West connects you with the 15 and either 84 or 86 in Idaho, probably a little of both, just to get to Twin Falls, which if you don't start from Billings at 6am is a reasonable place to stop for the night, particularly as they have some nice scenery and some good motels and restaurants. By the way, Twin Falls was the site of ... read more

Wednesday dawned cool in the Rubys. The sun didn’t reach Taylor Canyon campground before morning hands were chilled breaking camp. We rolled out and went just five miles to breakfast in Lamoille, at the bitter End Tavern. Under the menu section for beverages was a section, “Better Beverages.” Bloody Mary? Bloody Christ!! Sent here by Detective Mike, we were soon preparing for the first dirt section of the trip, a county road from Lamoille to Secret Pass Road. It was an 18 mile section of dirt and gravel, in excellent condition. How does one prepare for dirt? The first step is to reduce tire pressure, from around 40 psi to about 20. This provides better traction on loose surfaces. The next step (if your bike is so equipped) is to raise the grip height of your ... read more

Tuesday dawned clear with the cacophony of bird calls. Crystal Crane Hot Springs creates a small wetland and Spring is in the air. The hot springs were largely peopled with birders visiting the Malheur Wildlife refuge, and they were up at 0500 preparing for their day. The first 100 miles to Fields took us through Frenchglen and over the Catlow Rim. The Malheur wetlands, fed by the Blitzen River draining the West slope of Steens mountains, were full of birdlife of every variety. The reptile factor was remarkable. As we rode along, numerous snakes crossed the road in front of us. Though we did not stop to confirm, about half of them appeared at 70 mph to be garter snakes or racers, and the others appeared to be rattlesnakes (Crotalus Viridis Lutosis) or their look ... read more

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 It froze again overnight and fortunately Richard had disconnected and drained the pressure hose. This is getting to be routine for us, although not a happy one, to be sure. With an eye to our escape to the coast, we planned a long drive today, and the weather and road conditions did not disappoint. It was a beautiful dry sunny blue sky day, just great for traveling and viewing all the wonderful scenery going by. Not a particularly good day for photos, although we did take a few, and one or two ‘traveling down the road’ videos. Nevada Highway 50 has the self-professed reputation of being the ‘loneliest highway in America’. And it lived up to its reputation, although Utah 21 provided stiff competition. We could count on one hand (sometimes one ... read more

Anoher great nights sleep, must be because we are fitting so much into our day, and the sun coming up over the mountains in Vegas was quite something to behold.Decided to try IHOP (International House lof Pancakes) for breakfast and their closest restaurant was right next door. The menu seemed to have pancakes with everything when we just wanted bacon and eggs. After searching thru the menu for a few minutes Gretchen spotted what we wanted and it was time to order.Thought we were in for a cheap breakfast but by the time the coffee, juice and fruit bowl was added it was more like.......Odd that the senior price(over 55 yrs and we qualified !!) for what we had would have been more expensive and the servings would have been smaller. Can't figure that one out.Perhaps we needed to read ... read more

You know you are in Nevada when you have to stop at a casino for a coffee!! Today we rode into Nevada after staying the night in Twin Falls, Idaho. The lack of any previous bike trips this summer finally caught up with us yesterday and we ended up going to sleep at an ungodly early hour. We both obviously needed the sleep and feel much better today. The sun finally appeared yesterday afternoon and it heated up quite a bit as we crossed Idaho but it has been mainly cloudy so far on the trip. The trip down through the Great Basin of Eastern Nevada along Route 93 was quite spectacular with high snow-capped mountains on one side for the first part of the trip. Most of the highway is at an elevation of almost ... read more
