Our home before it was blown away!
i started my journey from San Fransisco to Nevada, black rock city, to venture to new territory and join the burning man fiesta ,aka the green man this year, 2007. i was living on Haight and Ashbury with My fellow traveler Karen's mates, Shane and Johanna. 8 of us organized a U haul and a mini van to take us and our bikes, food, dressing up gear and 150 liters of water! this water was compulsory to enter the black rock city, and to survive the 7 days in a hot desert. it took us a good 11 hours after all the stop offs and excitement , we finally arrived! it was around midnight and as we drove in, all the burning man veterans said hello and welcome home! the que was long, full of trucks, RV's and people jumping around with excitement, that they too had finally arrived to their new home for the next week! as we were driving slowly with our window's open chatting to people as they walked by, a man shouted lunar eclipse tonight! we all looked up and there it was a full moon beginning fade away. i have never witnessed a lunar eclipse before and to

metal tree house that palyed the pipe organ!
see my first one as i arrive to the burning man festival was exceptional, it really made me feel like this week was gonna be special! watching the moon disappear and the slowly come back with a beautiful tint of orange was surreal.
we finally set up our camp, which consisted of three gazebo's and our 6 tents, and the sun was rising! we all had dreadful white Russians pre made in a bottle, bought in the local gas station before arriving. they were not the best, however, the satisfaction of having our home built and protected from the sun with our gazebo's, we did not care any more, we were overjoyed and slightly delirious! as the sun was rising we all decided to try and get some sleep before the heat took over our bodies!
When I woke up, felt like i was suffocating. the heat and sweat was unbearable. i had to get out of my sauna/tent immediately. once i stepped outside it was only slightly better, there was a breeze in the air. it was at least 40 degrees at this stage, and i looked over to the camp area and every one was up looking exhausted.

another classic art car
i actually felt like my skin was literally melting off , i had to get under the shade quickly. we ended up spending the first part of our day misting our face's and body's with warm water from a spray bottle and using a fan to cool ourselves down! it was like heaven when you got a spay and the fan hitting you, for at least a second you felt cool in your skin. i couldn't hack sitting around any longer, it was torture, i was sure that if you cycled around, the breeze would help. so i put on my cream and headed out to see what my new home looked like.
it was shaped like a horse shoe. the numbers on the clock went form 2 to 10 and the names of the streets were from anxious, intertidal, etc. we were living on 9 habitat. once we ventured out into the playa it was amazing! everyting was all about giving and art! people would stop you on your bike and offer you drinks, food if you were hungry, or just to have a chat with you to see how you were etc. the ages varied from people in their 70's

shower time for the burners!
to people my age. some people even brought their young children with them(hardcore burning man peeps, i might add!). the playa was full of art cars, that went around the city, bringing people around the place and having parties etc on board! it was classic! the art crs caried from pigs, to huses, t shis, to tree houses mae of steel that had pip organs insid that you could play with, to a giant size shopping trolley! that was my favouriet one, as on our first day we jumped on and handed out water to people all over the playa and on the streets, it was deady fun! every day was more and more exciting! peopel were always dressed up, men in womens clothes, women dressed in bright colours, furry boots and paint. alot of peoepl were aked, cycling around(not to sure how comfy they were, but fair paly to them!) it was amazing to walk around and meet people, alot were handing out free stuff, for example, this one couple beside us were the lip srvice tent, they handed out lip balm, tide on a string so you could wear it around your neck, it said"let the man burn,

resident face painter,denis loving it!
not your lips!"very clever and very handy to have!
if the heat durning the day was not killing you, it was ten the sand! the white outs were crazy, it was like been in the film acopoytic. you could not see two feet in front of you. when the first one hit(day three), we were all sitting down under our gazebos' and then suddenly out of no where this huge gust of wind and sand came along and took our gazebo's away and nearly our tents! it was mental, there was nothing we could do, they were gone in the air and never seen again! it was so funny. we tried to hold down one and i whipped my camera out for it, as it looked crazy, hopefully it will come out! but once we figured out we made a parachute instead of a nice cover for our tents! we decided to salvage what was left of our tents, and head ot to the dane area , t"the deep end" not far form our camp and go for a boogie! and this was very surreal. people were off there faces at around 1 in the afternoon, in the middle of

me and nally, chilling on the playa!
a sand storm, giving it socks, the dj still playing his music(don't ask me how!?) and everyone was wearing there googles and masks, it looked mental!! the sand storms lasted for around 2-3 hours so we hung out with these lovely canadians and then on the second sand storm the next day we headed out to the irish bar, which was an actual building(or course, the rest were tents, but we do it in style) and drank for the afternoon! it was deadly fun duing the sand storm as every one is sittig around like normal, however they have their goggle and masks on, it looks so funny. also because of the dust, it is all over your hair and body. it attaches itself to you and you all start to become very ancient looking, antique style, with grey har and evry wrinkle enhanced.

at night the place looked like a mii vegas. it was a city that was uv florescent, with rave music going on every where and a playground in the middle! there are loads of art cars that you jump on and ride with for a while, there is usually a bar there and they give

roller skating in the desert! as you do!
you drinks, whatever they have, which is usually and margarita, as the mix is so easy to bring. the amount of dance tents, raves, and bars which were all free booze was mental, you could not comprehend how nice people were giving away free food and drink to you, for know reason but cos we were in black rock city! it was crazy! every night got crazier. when you thought you saw the weirdest thing, the next day would shock you even more!
the night of teh burning was amazing. alot of fire dancers and singing and watching the an burn. it was amazing to watch. a huge fireworks display and then the man on fire and then out of no where he explodes, this huge bag and explosion! the heat hitting your face and then every one ging balistic! running towards the falling, burning green man! the night was no more different to the previous nights. maybe the fact that the whole city was out to play that night, rather the other nights might have been a bit quieter! either way it was incredible to be apart of this festival! i would recommend everyone to go and check it
