My goal for this day was to get through Death Valley before the heat of the day hit and to see the ghost town of Rhyolite in Nevada. I was hoping to stay in the bustling metropolis of Pahrump, NV for the night. It seemed like everyone had the same plan and many were up and into breakfast shortly after 6 am. There were two groups of motorcyclists at the same Best Western and they knew they had to get most of their travel for the day done during the morning hours. Both were groups of guys in their 50’s and 60’s and all were riding Harleys…..very noisy Harleys at that. Still, they were good sorts and I had a chat with them as they were packing up to go. I must say that I would ... read more

Beatty, NV, is a tiny town of 800 people. There is a casino, a bar, a Dennys, a Museum, a candy store, some hotels, a thrift shop, a general store, a few burros... But it's quite close to the Death Valley National Park, and that keeps people coming through. El Portal Motel is where I write from right now. Simple, quiet, the room has a microwave and a refrigerator, cable, and a flawless, included in the price, wi-fi. Better than you can say about Las Vegas' hotels. It's all good. Here are some pictures...... read more

OK, we left Fremont Monday morning at about 7:30. The short story: we drove across Yosemite, down the Sierra Nevadas, crossed Death Valley, stopped in Rhyolite (ghost town), the stopped for the night in Pahrump, NV. The drive across CA to Yosemite was uneventful. No major queeziness in the windy sections, but we did stop for a break shortly thereafter. Then on into the park. I had forgotten how far of a drive it is to cross the park. We stopped at the overlook at Olmsted Point and followed the path out to the look out point. Thing I & II posing with Half Dome in the background Ashley pretending to be Spiderman After leaving the park, we drove down 395 through the mountains southward, and stopped in Bis... read more

I'm going to keep this short since we've arrived at the Stagecoach Hotel in Beatty, NV and I'm anxious to get to the casino after dinner and putting Ethan down in his sleeping back. I already typed this once, not realizing the hotel gives a 8 min. connection per session. My lengthy entry was lost. Here is the short version - in less than 8 min. We got up early and made it to the Grand Canyon before most visitors. The number of things to do and wait time for shuttles prevented us from getting to the main stretch of viewpoints until all the tourists arrived. I actually prefer the experience we've had at other National Parks, but the beauty and vastness of the Grand Canyon is beyond words. I used my camcorder to capture what ... read more

Just out of Beatty, Nevada, Rhyolite is a ghost town with much character. With a population of over 10,000 at one time, Rhyolite was no small town. The town was founded in 1904 and by 1907 even had electricity. There is one building still standing today in Rhyolite that was made from 10,000 beer bottles of which there was no shortage in Rhyolite. Another building, the bank building, was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. Ruins of its wall still stand today. The financial panic of 1907 took its toll on the town and businesses started to shut down. Then, the mines started to play out and by 1916 the power and light company had shut down and the people had moved on. Another example of "counting your chickens before they're hatched" is the ... read more

This morning we left the Grand Canyon on route to Death Valley back via Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. It was so cold in the morning that when we got into the car the water in Shannon’s pump bottle had frozen solid. The internet told us that the overnight low would have been somewhere between -13 degrees C and -7 degrees C. We had originally planned to stay inside Death Valley itself at a place called Stovepipe Wells, but we had been told by my cousin/aunty/uncle that went through a few months prior that the place was in the middle of nowhere and gets so hot over summer that they close down and put up a sign “Gone Fishing”. So we stayed in Beatty, which was still in Nevada (which has different gambling laws to California). ... read more
