We traveled to the park a day early as a storm with high winds was forecast for our original departure date. Once settled in, we drove into Scottsbluff and Mike got a haircut and we both got flu vaccines. Gusts were in the mid 40's by afternoon, though. We stay settled in the RV until Friday afternoon. After the wind calmed down a little, we enjoyed walking a few laps around the RV park to get some exercise. We let it warm up on Saturday and then headed to Scottsbluff National Monument. First, we toured the museum and watched the short video. Then, we drove up to the parking lot at the top of the bluff. The 1.6 mile drive up is through 3 tunnels in the bluff. At the top of the plateau, we hiked ... read more

We started out our day today with a homemade breakfast of fried eggs, toast, coffee, juice, and fruit compliments of the Willa Cather Foundation that operates the Airbnb. After loading we drove around the town to visit some more of the Willa Cather sites. We visited her original home, her home church, and the Milner family home upon which she based her book “My Antonio”. We drove by the foundation home in the old opera house, but it wasn’t open yet. Our goal today was Chimney Rock and Scottsbluff, both in Nebraska. Ultimately we were headed to Chadron, NE to spend the night on our way to Mt Rushmore and Rapid City. We drove across Nebraska on several two lane roads. We met little traffic…..many times thinking we were the only ones on the road. After ... read more

The day started cool and overcast in Colorado Springs. Philip was up first and walked across the street to a Starbucks while I was waking up and getting ready. He enjoyed the short walk and compared the weather to the cool, soft days we often find in Ireland. Just lovely. We finished breakfast in the hotel—only so-so—and got on the road by 10:00. Mist and rain started soon after leaving the hotel and made the drive through the Denver traffic more stressful than expected. Lots of construction and stop-and-go traffic made the ride slower than expected, too. The drive was north on I-25 to the southern edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming, then east on I-80 before taking off on the smaller roads leading north to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and the sights for today. We drove to Chimney Rock ... read more

Elles mesurent ... read more

I'm back in Nebraska for what I hope is the last time on this trip. I came here to see a couple of really cool geological sights before I head back up north into Wyoming and South Dakota tomorrow. The two places I visited, Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock, were exceptional. One of the things that surprised me today was the sun. The temperature never got over 75 F, but the sun was brutal. I felt like I was in Texas again with 100+ degree temperatures, shading my arms and bare skin in the car as I rode around. And when I got to the top of Scotts Bluff for the fantastic views, I felt quite unprotected. I brought bug spray on this trip, but I didn't think sunscreen would be necessary in October, this far ... read more

As we crossed the border into Nebraska we stopped at the Visitor Centre and chatted to Randy who worked part time whilst his wife was the local minister. The building was in the middle of nowhere but apparently used to be a chain burger-bar- not sure who ate there though as there did not seem to be any houses around for miles. It was different to most others VC we had been in, the layout was more like a ‘home’, including lounge sofas and lots of ornaments and memorabilia. We had coffee which was free and help yourself to what you want and we chatted to Randy for ages before heading off with a pile of brochures he insisted we would need about Nebraska and the area as well as some useful advice. We were following ... read more

The Planes were at Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. Shown here is one of the X-Wing Fighters used to defend Colorado from the Empire. The Trains Autos and Bikes were at the Forney Transportation Museum on the North Side of Denver, They literally had cars of all shapes and sizes. Wait, thats no ordinary Buffalo, that's a Cell Tower. After the museums I headed north out of Colorado and into Nebraska. I ended up in Scottsbluff which is about an hour from.... CARHENGE! BTW: I'm in Southwest Nebraska, The Tornadoes today were in Northeast Nebraska, tomo... read more

I got up at 6:30 this morning feeling well rested and ready for the day vowing to get an early start. After having coffee, walking Oscar, and visiting with some fishermen I am again behind. These chores are getting in the way. Washed the dishes, put the chair away secured everything, disconnected and went to the dump station. Needed water too. I did improve on yesterday, it was 8:40 when I got on the road. The drive is becoming almost effortless, open road at 75 mph and fewer cars all the time. The landscape has changed and now I really feel like I’m in the west. There are more cattle ranches, wheat fields, and horses grazing, continues to be flat. I stopped at a Walmart in North Platt and went food shopping. I am craving vegetables ... read more
