Headed up the Going-to-the-sun Road this morning to Logan Pass from St Mary. Currently you can't drive past there due to the Howe Ridge fires, only shuttle and tour buses can, with no stops until they reach the Apgar area. We did the steep walk up to the Hidden Lake lookout. It was very windy and raining a bit as we started out. They mean it when they say be prepared for any type of weather. The sun finally managed to come out while we were on our way back down. Walked a bit on the Highline Trail along the cliffside, too. Then we headed up to the Many Glacier area from here, which was about a 40 minute drive.... read more

So I'm catching up...been offline for almost three days. The Many Glacier area is just the place to do that. NO cell reception and the Many Glacier Hotel only had WiFi in the lobby, but it was slower than dial-up. Weird but good to be unplugged for a few days. The hotel is old and charming, but a little on the noisy side. Squeaky floors and you can definitely hear your neighbors. But luckily most people quiet down by 10pm. It's right on the Swiftcurrent lake where you can easily spot moose. We also saw mountain goats up on the hill and some bears. We hiked Apikuni Falls on the way to the hotel, short hike but pretty much straight up. Had a very close encounter with a black bear, which we watched for about 20 ... read more

This fall break we are heading to Seattle where Mark got a new job assignment; we are to take a look at the area we will be moving to in the Spring of 2018. This is our great American road trip #9. We have had many road trips in the past 7 years, and I still marvel at the amazing road network in the United States. You probably are wondering why that is a marvel, but you really should look at it from my point of view. I have seen a lot of the world and there is nowhere else in the world where you can get on the road and go endlessly around an entire continent. That aside, I grew up in Africa where the roads leave a lot to the imagination; like I, mention ... read more

Mileage 269.6 We didn’t have to pack up the van as usual because we’re staying in the same hotel tonight, so we started out early this morning. Susan’s driving down the road and my GPS has us going a different way than we had planned. So, cutting across multiple lanes of traffic multiple times made us look crazy. But who cares? As we were driving down the road, we saw a guy cutting the grass in the field that was at least as big as a football field with a weed whacker. Seriously, this is when I would buy a lawn mower, not a weed whacker . . . Jerry! We finally made it to the West Gate of Glacier National Park and got on the “Going-to-the-Sun Road”. We drove down the road bordered by trees ... read more

After Yellowstone we headed north through Montana. A one night stop over in Helena Montana then a stop at Glacier National Park (Montana). This US national park is close to the Canadian boarder. The main attraction is a drive on the "Follow the Sun Road" which takes you through mountain passes and glacier views to the Pacific side the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, when we arrived they were still clearing snow through the mountain road (it is closed during the winter). We could only travel about 20% of the route. The drive was beautiful. We stayed one night at the KOA outside the park and headed to the Canadian border early the next morning. See photos of border crossing.... read more

This was our final day at Glacier, so we had to make it count, even though the weather was not taking our last day into consideration. At breakfast we enjoyed conversation with other guests at the Bed and Breakfast and upon their recommendation we decided to go hike the Avalanche Lake Trail. Though we had rather go hike one on the east side of the park, the amount of travel swayed us from that trek. Donald had briefly considered driving to the Yaak Valley area of Montana in search of Tom from the show Mountain Men. He would have loved to have purchased an animal fur that Tom himself had trapped and skinned. But that would have been a 3 hour drive there and a 3 hour drive back, so we stuck with the decision to ... read more

I never thought I would say that I went mud riding in Glacier, but today we did just that. But not before Mother Nature attacked us with all her mighty tiny blood sucking critters. We headed back to the park today since the weather had cleared up. We decided on going to the more remote section to get away from the crowds and hopes of finding the elusive wildlife. If given the choice, I will always choose the road less traveled. I did a little reading before going and knew that some of the roads were not paved. But not sure we were prepared for the condition of the roads. We took the Camas road on the west side which leads to the remote section of Polebridge and other areas. We stopped at a meadow (actually ... read more

Today we ventured to the East side of the park. Since the Going to the Sun Road is not open yet (due to clearing snow), we were unable to travel through the park to the east side, so we had to go around the park. It was a long drive, but scenic. All along the way, we followed the railroad tracks. The area is very active with trains. We saw train trusses, train bridges, train tunnels through the mountains, cargo trains, Amtrak trains, everything trains. The route took us through a small section of Glacier titled Goat Lick. We stopped to see if any goats were out for they like that area due to the salt content on the mountain side (hence the name) but were not there at the same time as they were. So ... read more

Our Glacier National Park trip began today and it started out in the dark. We had the alarm set for 3:15am for our early flight, but for some odd reason our power went out around 2:30am. What's worse than having to get ready at 3am for a flight - getting ready at 3am in the complete darkness. Can't see what we forgot to pack and can't even see what we might look like after an attempt to be presentable using a flashlight. And as luck would have it, the power came back on as we were heading out the door. Pretty typical for me. We made it to our flight with no other issues and changed planes in Chicago. I guess I can technically say I have been to Illinois now. We landed safely in Kilespell, ... read more

After breakfast and packing (we had to change cabins today..) we drove back to Logan Pass, in the sunshine this time! The morning started out quite cold (38 degrees at the coldest point), so we set out wearing down vests, jackets, and gloves. By the afternoon, I was in a hiking skirt and tank top! The hike to Hidden Lake starts on a boardwalk at over 6000 feet. The boardwalk uses steps to climb steeply and then turns into a trail and climbs up to 7000 feet in the first 1.3 miles! It was hard going at first... The trail is very popular, and there were quite a few people until we reached the overlook, where most turned around. Just before the overlook, a mountain goat joined the hikers, and followed us along. We tried to ... read more
