August 12th, 2011 Friday Apgar Campground, Glacier National Park, MT. Staying in the campground today so ending mileage is still 14838.
Declared it a down day. We stayed in camp and worked on blog. Napped and read.
Also spent time looking at maps and tour books planning what we were going to do next. Jim and Dianne were planning on heading due south to Yellowstone National Park. We had thought to tag along, but that would put us further south and the weather forecasts showed very hot temperatures going east from that area. We had also been through that same area several times in the past. We made the decision then to leave on Sunday and to continue east from where we were along highway 2 and then down into Great Falls, MT. We had noted that the Charles Russell Museum, studio and home were there in Great Falls and we both like his work.
When we informed Jim and Dianne of our plans they invited us to share a spaghetti dinner made with elk meat with them Saturday night. Called it an early night since we wanted to be up real early in the morning.
August 13th,
2011 Saturday Apgar Campground, Glacier National Park, MT. Beginning mileage is 14839. 50 degrees and clear.
Enough is enough! We were going to see the Rocky Mountain rams today, of course first we had to find them since they have eluded us time after time. Our plan was simple, we get up early enough to take the first express shuttle up to Logan Pass. We had learned that the sheep liked to hang out in the parking lot of the Visitors’ Center until the tourists and their cars start arriving and then they move into the nearby meadows behind the Center. We had also learned that the ewes had kicked out the rams by this time and that is why we were seeing ewes and lambs in a group without rams.
Drove Rosie II to the Apgar Transit Center to catch the 7:30 bus. Good thing we were early as by the time the bus left with us on it, there were enough people in line to fill a second bus. The ride to Logan Pass was uneventful but as spectacular as two days ago. Got out of the bus and climbed up the hillside and then walked back
on the walkway behind the Visitors’ Center, and THERE THEY WERE! About 25 magnificent rams with their huge curled horns. We settled down with others to watch them. It was also good to stop and catch our breaths as were up at 6,646 feet in height and the air is thinner here. After watching them and a hoary marmot and some ground squirrels, we walked back down to the bus stop and caught another bus back to the transit center and Rosie II.
Since we made the decision to leave Glacier in the morning, we drove into the community of Hungry Horse to purchase some Montana huckleberry pie at a bakery that has been in the huckleberry business since 1949. We decided to have lunch there also. The huckleberry Bar-B-Q sauce was good but the chicken on my sandwich was overcooked and dry. While looking to get gas, spotted a small laundry-mat and decided I would do a load of whites that would be enough clean clothes we felt to get us home. Valerie went then to get gas and a loaf of cheese bread to go with dinner. Gas was $3.49 a gal and took 12.484 gals for
a total of $43.68. Mileage was 14854.
Drove back into Glacier Park and stopped at the businesses around the entrance to look at their T-shirts and gift items. Wanted T-shirts for ourselves and hadn't found the "right" ones. Bought T-shirts for both of us and a couple gift items.
Back at the campground, we filled up with fresh water and dumped our holding tanks before returning to our site.
We made it back to our site in time to put away the clean clothes and relaxed before dinner at 6:00. At 6:00, we walked over next door to where Jim and Dianne had set up their table and had salad, spaghetti, and cheese bread for our farewell dinner. After visiting awhile, we then had the very good huckleberry pie for dessert. Since we wanted to leave early in the morning, we called it a night about 8:00 after saying our good-byes.
