Today was the beginning of this fall's wilderness trek. It began in Atlanta, GA and ended in Silver Gate, MT. After an early morning wake up, a visit through Atlanta airport, Denver airport and Billings airport, we meet up with our traveling companions. Along for the adventure this year is David, Peggy, Linda, and myself - all family and all eager to see what the week has planned for us. Being that most of the day was spent either on an airplane or in an airport, our only goal for the day was to drive the Beartooth Highway and stop in Silver Gate MT for the night. What a hot summer! Colorado is burning up in temperature and in fires! It seemed like a great time to hit the road and finish my continental US states! I roped a friend intohitting my forty seventh and eighth states- North Dakota and Montana. The “concession” from my end was time in Yellowstone on the way back. Though I had visited Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last year, I knew that there was plenty more there to explore, so we sketched out a trip and threw our camping gear in the trunk. A long stretch of road lay ahead as we headed out on Friday afternoon. We passed the Ft. Collins fire, choking on the smoke and feeling for all of those who have lived in that for weeks. On the Stillwater Nye, MT is on the Stillwater River. It is a good ride in a canoe. There are a few bends in the river that take some skill to get around. I have dumped the canoe once - but that is because the guy in the bow leaned like he was on a motorcycle instead of in a canoe as we went around the corner. It was May - so the water was ice cold. My folks have a cabin up there so I have spent a fair amount of time in the area. There are great trails for 4-wheeling. Hikes for different level hikers of all ages.
