Truman House
We didn't take the tour, but walked down to at least look at Truman's home in Independence. We got up far too early this morning to head south. Our first stop was a quick look at Clay County Savings Bank, the location of the first daylight bank robbery in American history, although it's not actually called that anymore. It was our cache for Clay County, Missouri and a virtual at that. We then headed to Independence to officially visit the Harry S Truman National Historic Site. We took a brief walk to the house and back before visiting the visitor center. It turns out that the Library and Museum is part of the site and we did that years ago. Oh, well. The boys enjoyed the slide show and I learned, or relearned, that Truman was a pianist who bought his 8-year-old daughter a Steinway baby grand for her birthday. (She wanted an electric train set.) My biggest disappointment of that visit was that Knitcraft, two doors down, wasn't open.
We then took a not-too-long drive southeast to Springfield to drop the camper and head to Wilson's Creek. It was an 1861 battle site that ended without a clear winner, although the Confederates held ground giving them a tactical victory. We watched a lighted map show (not
sure what the official name is) and then did the battlefield drive. It was nearly 100 degrees, so we very much limited our adventuring. We did see the two remaining Civil War-era buildings and some cannons, which the boys appreciated.
Our primary goal for the day was to eat at Lambert's. We only waited for 45 minutes, which wasn't bad. Our waitress was very nice (and from Wisconsin) and the roll-thrower looked too young to be as accurate as he was. Jeff liked his pulled pork, the boys barely ate their meals (aside from the rolls), and I could've had many more helpings of fried potatoes and onions. For $36, it was definitely worth it. While waiting, I took a quick walk through the parking lot. I saw license plates from nineteen states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, California and Alaska.
Our plan for the evening was to return to a very comfortably cool camper for me and the pool for the boys. Unfortunately, the circuit breaker tripped at some point, leaving the camper closer to 95. We reset it and headed for the pool, which was shaded, warm and quite lovely. Cole had other ideas, though, so
he and I headed back to an again warming camper. We've reset it five times now, and it seems like perhaps it may hold. I certainly hope so.

Today, I learned that Liam knows the Axis and Allied countries from World War II.
We forgot to put a little first aid kit in the camper.
Conversation of the Day (while waiting to see a Truman slide show): "We don't have slides in our movies; we have menus." Three minutes into the movie, he asked "When's the movie going to start?"
