Spirit of St Louis
This is a replica, its more correct to say a "sister ship. Made after Lindbergh's historic Atlantic crossing. Day 9 – July 5
th Today started out slowly as we slept in from our 4
th of July adventures. Mom made a heaping pile of bacon and eggs. Annie’s family joined us for breakfast. We all shared stories, played farm with Lucy, and ate!
Don and I set out to the post office for stamps. Our quick trip ended in screams! As I pulled out of the parking space, a woman backed up into the side of THE NEW VAN……AHHHHHHHHH!!! Ok, so it turns out it wasn’t that bad, but my blood was pumping for a while. There is a tiny scratch that can be buffed out, but the van only had 3,000 miles on it!
After calming down we headed to the
Missouri History Museum in
Forest Park. They had a nice traveling exhibit from the NFL Hall of Fame. We also enjoyed the permanent exhibits on St. Louis neighborhoods. I guess it was more fun for me than Don, I kept saying, “Oh, I remember. . .” When did I get old?
As we parked to go into the museum, Don noticed that we had picked up a nail in the tire. So, after our visit,
we drove over to get that taken care of.
We dashed back to meet Mom and Annie for dinner and a night at the MUNY. We ate at
Fitz’s a popular spot in the
U City Loop area. A bit of history:
“Fitz's Root Beer first appeared in St. Louis at a local drive-in restaurant back in 1947. Famous for its tasty draft root beer and hamburgers, Fitz's quickly became a local tradition. After sadly disappearing for a number of years, Fitz's Root Beer was revived in 1993 when Fitz's Bottling Company, America's original soda microbrewery opened in the historic and vibrant Delmar Loop. “
We watched as they bottled the soda and had fun drinking root beer. How many frosty mugs can one-person drink you might ask, well I for one drank three. WOW, they were good!
Off to the
MUNY! For those of you not familiar with St Louis in the summer, you are missing one of the greatest outdoor theater experiences, ever. The MUNY was opened in 1917 and has been giving St. Louis a chance to enjoy amazing theater. Most of its shows now are musical theater, but it started with
Oops
Now you know why I was a musician and not a football player. “As You Like It”, Shakespeare. It was once billed as providing “Glorious Grand Opera”. Those that created this magnificent space and tradition felt that the theater should not be shared with only the wealthy. There have been, and still are, over 1,500 free seats for each performance. We scurried into our seats on what turned out to be a perfect MUNY night and leaned back to enjoy a cleaver production of “Nunsense” MUNY Style with St. Louis local Phyllis Smith as Julia, Child of God. We laughed and cheered! Thank you St. Louis for such a great tradition!
Off to bed for our early 5 am departure north!
Thanks for reading,
Jill and Don

Christening the new Van!!
Don and Jill, So nice to hear from you and see the pictures of the huge crowd in St Louis for the fireworks. The bacon and eggs sounded great for breakfast. We are really enjoying your adventures and tire repairs. Glad to know you got to spend some time with your mom, Jill. Miss you and looking forward to more stories. Love, Jay and Pat.
