The second stop of the day was the Dickerson Park Zoo. Contrary to other reviews I had read that said the zoo was really small, I found it was a decent size, though not as big as the Kansas City Zoo. The first area we came to was South America, which is home to Capuchin Monkeys, Maned Wolf, and Macaws among others. Australia houses the kangaroos, Emus, Parrots, and the Petting Zoo. My daughter Kim runs ahead while Connor stays back with my wife Katy and me. The petting zoo is a chance for the kids to interact with goats, a donkey, and a young camel. Connor is hesitant to approach the camel as he always is with new experiences. Just a part of his shyness I suppose. I always hang back to try and get ... read more

2660 South Scenic Ave. Springfield, MO 65807 6-11-2011 The first stop of the day was at the home of the American Legion Post #639. Luckily we got there fairly early as there appeared to be a Volkswagen vehicle show taking place at the Post. I had planned the drive to Springfield around photographing the UH-1H and the AH-1G dedicated to the Vietnam veterans, but there was a surprise. Pulling in to the parking lot the first thing I noticed was the USS Lapon’s sail. The USS Lapon (SSN-661) was decommissioned in 1992 after serving with the Atlantic Fleet. The USS Lapon earned several citations and medals including a Presidential Unit Citation, six Meritorious Unit Citations, and an Artic Service Metal. One mission of the Lapon was chronicled in the book “Blind Man’s Bluff.” The sail was ... read more

Well, Mike and I are stuck at home for a while due to lack of funds, but we have our travel dreams, and we like to plan ahead. Far, FAR ahead. At the moment, we've decided to begin saving up for a trip to the UK and Ireland. We know what we want to do and see. We have it prioritized. We realize that our priorities will probably change as we get closer to the time we actually get to go. But that's why we're keeping everything on the computer in digital format. It's so much easier to edit a changed itenerary if you just have to highlight and delete what's being removed and type in what's being added. It's also a lot less messy! The one thing that we know will never change is the ... read more

Geo: 37.2153, -93.2982Good weather this morning as we head off to Saint Louis and a very busy freeway system. After bypassing Saint Louis with only one wrong turn we head towards the home of the Simpsons, Springfield Missouri. My driving is now more confident as I exit of the interstate and venture onto verious parts of Route 66, however my sat nav is going crazy as it continually recalculates and we frequently get lost. Not that that phases us as we can always cut back to the Interstate as we move ahead. We stop at a town called Rolla for lunch and take in a classic American take away, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Rolla is next to Fort Dixon and a heap of military folk. Guess what, the chicken was much better than what we get at home.We ... read more

Well, it is hard to believe. I completed my dual Masters program at UMSL as well as the University of Strasbourg in France. So, I decided to do a trip IU have always wanted to do. That is to go storm chasing in the Great Plains. I recruited my brother Mark and my son Andrew and off we went...the day after I officially receives my IMBA. This is jus t a brief story of what we did and saw. I hope you enjoy. ... read more

Depart Chicago, IL 11:55PM on Tuesday, May 18th via Megabus Arrive in St. Louis, MO 6:25AM on Wednesday, May 19th Sit around in the Civic Center MetroLink Station with my computer. I am dehydrated so I get a soda. Depart St. Louis, MO 8:25AM on Wednesday, May 19th via Greyhound I have never taken a Greyhound bus before but it was quite the experience. I was clearly out of my element. For one, I was the only person that had purchased my ticket at home and printed it out. Is it cheaper to buy at the station? Maybe it was the area and/or my destination but I was the only person on the bus who had a full set of teeth. Not to say that people missing teeth are in any way less than but, for ... read more

Geo: 37.209, -93.2916Orlando Overview ~ I give it a "C" for adult vacationers! We liked Orlando. We have both been to Florida before and of course we love Florida. I would be interested in retiring there in about 20 years ~ one can dream, right?? We loved the weather in Orlando in May. I will highlight the good and the bad but overall, we have decided to not travel to Orlando again. This was our least favorite vacation so far. I apologized to hubby on several occasions, even while we were there, for picking such a destination without thinking it through. In the end, we discussed the top six items we want on a vacation and that is what we will keep in mind the next time I decide to waste our hard-earned money and precious annual ... read more

Geo: 37.209, -93.2916May 9, 2010It is Sunday night and we are packed, the car is clean and full of gas, and the alarm is set for 5:00 am tomorrow! YIKES! Of course, the one thing I've yet to do.... go online and actually purchase our park tickets. You see... I was fairly set on a 2-day, 2-park pass to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure ~ all owned by Universal and in the same area ~ 2 parks themed around movies, characters, etc. Lots o' roller coasters, lots of character amusement. THEN... I followed a friend in Orlando on Twitter last week and they spent the day at Epcot at the World Showcase ~ 1.3 miles, 11 countries, all showcasing various performers, drinks, foods, and entertainment!! How exciting I thought!! This is a park we must ... read more

I honestly wondered as we set out on this journey if Route 66 would live up to her expectations. I had my suspicions that it would, but of course I enjoy history, research, and exploration: all of the key ingredients for a mother road traveler. If an antique suspension bridge does not do anything for your curiosity, then go to Disney Land. It takes a deep appreciation for things of the past to find true enjoyment in a trip like this. We set out of Springfield heading for Oklahoma City today. Alignments of the old route took us through Joplin, passing small towns on to Carthage, home of the restored Route 66 Drive-In movie theater. It operates on a seasonal schedule, but the knowledge that it is in good hands and doing well gives me enough ... read more

Now, as you're reading these entries, don't think that a trip down Route 66 is all play and no work. It's draining at times- mentally, emotionally, and physically. When we headed out of St. Louis this morning, I had little more than four and a half hours worth of sleep. When you've been driving all day and you try running off of that kind of recharge, you're in for a crash... well, not a car crash hopefully... an energy... anyway, you're asking for it. But just as I begin to think that the interstate may be more feasible, that old stretch of two lane, broken and faded roadway laid out like a ribbon across the hills pulls me back. Craig and Dottie Bridegam are secretly weary, I know. But they remain upbeat and continue to follow ... read more
