DAY ONE (September 4, 2009)

My husband Patrick and I began our Livingston adventure to East Africa on American Airlines, departing St. Louis for Chicago (ORD), then on to London Heathrow. Because we redeemed AA frequent flier miles for business class tickets, our schedule was a bit convoluted and our travels were long and arduous. We departed Friday afternoon and arrived at Arusha, Tanzania mid-Sunday. 43 hours of travel. Yikes.

There we met up with a college friend and bridesmaid (Anne Leverone, St. Paul, MN) and a colleague from Maryville and Maritz (Barcy Fox of Lexington, MA) and joined a band of brothers (and sisters) for Tauck World Discovery's Classic Safari tour of Tanzania and Kenya.

Our flights were uneventful – which I always consider a good thing. Meals were decent but not like they used to be in the good old days. (Man, I know I'm getting old when I say things like that.) But the business class seats are a lot more comfortable … you can recline fully to sleep. Each unit has its own access to a personal TV monitor, which offers your personal choice of movies, TV shows, games, etc. I watched "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock. Cute -- won't win any awards, but an entertaining way to pass the time. Also caught a few reruns of “Two and a Half Men”. Berta always makes me laugh out loud; it's just embarrassing to be caught chortling out loud when others in the cabin are trying to catch a few Z's.
