So, my goal this year should be to finally get prepared for a trip before 3am. It shouldn't take so long, but I just never start until after dinner on the night before. Not that there is a lot to pack for this trip, but I have a lot of technical changes to my routine:

I've dropped the Dell 600m laptop (5 pounds) for a Nokia N900 smartphone/tablet (0.4 pounds). I've also dropped the DV camcorder for a Kodak Zi8 handheld solid-state video recorder (thanks Tb). The N900 should allow me to easily update my blog and also have a lot more to do while I sit around the airport or on the runway. If nothing else, it'll be a lot easier to access WiFi signals without the awkwardness of pulling out a full size laptop.

Tonight I went over to target and bought a couple new pairs of cargo shorts because my previous travel pairs all became garage clothes and are now in tatters. I bought a smart new windbreaker (if Target sells anything smart) to replace the shell I used to wear that is now also garage apparel.

I forgot to have someone at Garmin (my former employer) dial up the Singapore maps onto my GPS, but I quickly learned that all of the maps are pirated on the Internet anyways, along with a key generator. How sad, but problem solved.

Today's itinerary is MCI-ORD-HKG-SIN with a departure of 6am Thursday and arrival of 11:45pm on Friday. Total time in the air will 21 hours, with a 15h39m segment in the middle. That will be far and away the longest single flight I've ever done. My total itinerary has 12 landings/takeoffs, but interestingly only 3 of them take place in the "am", including 2 this morning flying to Chicago.

My good travel friend with 1K status (see 2005 trip) applied an expiring SWU (System Wide Upgrade) to my itinerary recently, so I've been or have the potential to be upgraded to business class on all my flights, although currently I am "waitlisted" on ORD-HKG-SIN and the return NRT-ORD. I hear that they often pull the trigger on these upgrades at the gate, so I'm still hopeful I will get the full benefit of my friends generosity.
