The day started in Vicksburg with a stop by the Cedar hill cemetery. We came upon it quite by accident and it was interesting. Cedar Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the United States that is still in use today. It is also the final resting place for the Confederate Soldiers of the Civil War. A section in the Cedar Hill (Vicksburg City ) Cemetery was set aside to provide a fitting burial place for Confederate soldiers who died of sickness or wounds. Known as "Soldier's Rest," the plot in Cedar Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for an estimated 5,000 Confederate soldiers. Once again we picked up the Great River Road. It's interesting that it's called the Great "River" Road because we saw the Mississippi only once during the ... read more

Today we left Baton Rouge at 9:15am and headed back to Scenic route 61. (A quick stop for gas ...$2.37 a gallon). We rejoined route 61 at St Francesville. The road was once again forested and we passed many logging trucks all heading east. We saw a few lovely smaller homes set back quite a way from the road plus a few antebellum plantations. Their driveways were lined with massive oak trees that had obviously been planted many years ago. They were fabulous. We left Louisiana and crossed the state line at 10:25am. Route 61 north of St Francesville was a 4 lane divided highway and it was a pretty quick trip to Natchez Mississippi. Natchez is a fabulous old river city and is steeped in history. It's one of Mississippi's oldest cities, it was founded ... read more

Hello from Vicksburg, MS. The last three days have zoomed by. I sure packed a lot into Saturday and Sunday in the DFW area. I explored Fort Worth on Saturday before going up to the evening activities at the Gaylord Texan. The highlight of my evening was a ride along in Elvis. Elvis is a 2002 Miata owned by Flyin’ Miata. Elvis is powered by a Corvette engine! Yes you read correctly a Miata with an LS1 engine. It weighs about 200 pounds more than a stock Miata and keeps the basic weight ratio. And it has that Corvette rumble which I can still feel. Ok so a lot of you may say why put a big V8 in a Miata and I guess my answer is because you can! I first saw Elvis at Road ... read more

On the 2nd day of a 4 day trip to see the Natchez Trace I spent time at the Vicksburg National Military Park. Because there were so many pictures of the park I decided to have a separate blog for them. I thought that it might take me an hour or hour and half to go through the park. I am pretty fast at such things. I read all the stuff, but don't usually dwell at any one spot for long. I had over slept on this morning and I wanted to be at Goldies Trail BBQ place I was going to eat at when they opened at 11AM. So when I got to the park at 9AM I wasn't too concerned, I still had a couple hours. Once I got to the Visitors Center I ... read more

This is the first day of 4 day trip I took over Easter, from KC to see the Natchez Trace. Day 1 was divided in to 2 blogs, because my plan changed at the last minute and I had the opportunity ride for a couple hours the night before my trip was supposed to start. The forecast is for rain and thunderstorms all the way to Little Rock. The thunderstorms were supposed to start in the afternoon, so I was up and gone by daybreak (51F). All my layers on and my rain suit. I was going to be in the rain today. And that is what I had most of the way to Little Rock then it just quit. I went another 60 miles with all the gear on then took off the rain suit ... read more

Well now, today Marilyn was out of bed and going with me. Yesterday I did the battlefield by myself but with a guide. That is always the best way to do it. Today we did the historic downtown section. This town has a nice feel to it. This battle or siege was fought in 1863. It ended on the 4th of July, the day after Gettysburg fell. Two major defeats for the Confederacy at once. Hard to believe the war went on for two more years. Anyway, General Grant came down the Mississippi from the north on boats, some of which were gun boats. See picture of the one that was on the river bottom for 100 years but preserved nicely by silt. These boats were loud due to cannon fire and the steam boilers. It ... read more

Well it has been a while on the 'ol blog-a-roo so here is an update. We actually left Sandpipers Resort in McAllen, TX on Friday February 13th. We got to San Antonio the first day since we played 3 sets of tennis before leaving. On Saturday, we went on over to Live Oak for one night. It is a beautiful park but no tennis courts. There is a sand volleyball court but no players around. It was Valentine's Day and also not very warm so we figure that made for the light turnout. Well that made it time to head for Livingston Texas which is my legal residence along with 102, 800 other rv-ers. The Escapees RV Club is based there. It is a great organization and it provides both a residence and mail forwarding ... read more

There was not another soul to be found on my way home from the restaurant as the road turned down the steep slope to the old mansion, and the wind was picking up significantly. Chilly! I parked at the iron gate on the side of the house, as the owner had insisted; it was ajar and slowly making that metal on metal groan that old gates do in certain weather and on Scooby Doo cartoons. I grabbed the heavy latch as I passed quickly through, and pulled the the gate shut with a solid clank behind me. "Good luck, ol car, you're on your own". I crept as silent as possible up the back brick pathway in the heavy gloom, through the garden and towards the glass enclosed conservatory, the keys clutched in my hand. As ... read more
