Thursday was great. After all the physical exursion of tuesday and wednesday, it was a much more chill day. Ingrid and I drove up to New Orleans to the Audobon center up there in order to pick up 2 sandhill cranes and take them back to the refuge, in the hopes that they will serve as foster parents. So lots of time in the car, which was fine by me! We got a tad lost on the way there, but end result was that we got it all sorted out and eventually made it there (took nearly 3 hours instead of 2. whoops!). The girl we worked with at the audobon place was super nice. She helped us load the cranes (in crates) into the truck bed and secure there. Then she let us have a ... read more

Another physically exhausting day. It was overcast in the morning so I didn’t bother putting on sun screen. The plan was to work on clearing the weeds near the fencing of one of the pens since it wasn’t supposed to rain until the afternoon. Took a while to find the weed-eaters and be shown how to use them, etc. Keep in mind my arms and legs were already sore from our day in the swamp on Tuesday lugging the fencing around through the water and constantly bending down to tie zip-ties. So the prospect of lifting a semi-heavy piece of machinery to clear away weeds was not so enticing. But we set to it. Had such trouble with the weed-eaters. Couldn’t get the one to start. Neither of us could get them to feed the thread ... read more

Today was an adventure, to say the least. Didn’t have to be at the office til 7am which was lovely. Ingrid and I went pretty much straight out into the field to continue working on putting up the fencing. The morning began as probably the warmest of any of the days we’ve been here so far. Which was lovely. I didn’t need any thermals and didn’t even need my sweatshirt. Considering how the morning progressed, I am grateful that it wasn’t as cold as some previous days have been. Anyway, we started working around 7:30 and were quickly into our old rhythm. We were getting lots done in a relatively short amount of time. About every hour we would finish a role of netting and have to walk back to the truck to get another. Pretty ... read more

Monday was a pretty easy-going day, so not much to report. 5:30am start... went to a different blind (no wet feet this time!). It was 15ft high so twas a bit precarious to get into but I succeeded without falling lol. I got to watch the sunrise and that was quite lovely. And I saw 12 cranes! Got to watch them for a few hours and was able to see most of their bands (I hope!). I feel that I am making progress. :) Late morning/early afternoon was spent working more on the fencing around the nesting area. It was so gorgeous outside! Realized pretty soon I will need to put on sunscreen. We found our rhythm last time so we were able to move quite quickly today, got a fair bit done Visiting retired Japanese ... read more

Ok. I just want to preface this by saying that normally, there wont be sooo many loooooong entries coming at you guys all at once. This week I just felt like I should let ya'll know everything that was going on since it is all new and exciting. Hopefully soon I'll be able to just sum up the highlights of the week in one entry. But for now, you will have to bear with me. ;-) Friday was just as lovely as I thought. It would have been the perfect day, if only I had brought my gum boots (huge rain boots). Alas, when I got up in the morning, there was frost on the truck and by the time it had defrosted enough for me to drive I was worried I wouldn't have enough time ... read more

On Wednesday we didn’t do too much. Just drove around some more learning more of the driving routes. Ingrid also got her first practice with trying to triangulate a bird. It was tough because the bird was probably flying at the time plus we kept being in places with lots of interference. But yeah. Then after lunch we went out with Scott for more driving. Stopped at another landowner’s place to talk to the couple. They were very cute. Probably in their early 80s. They have 18 grandkids! Crazy! And their first great-grandchild will be born this year. Insane. They had two very cute dogs and many cows, including some calves (adorable! I wish I had my camera on me - they came right up to me). They also often see cranes in their yard. Then, ... read more

Day 2 was quite as wonderful as day one! After a night of crazy rain and wind, the morning began (and continued) cloudy and cold. In the morning Ingrid and I went by ourselves back to the blind we had gone to yesterday, in order to see what birds were there and to write down what we saw. This time we took our gum boots, because of the rain. Good thing! The path, which had been quite muddy yesterday, was muddy and under a few inches of water. It’s actually kinda fun walking through stuff like that with the gum boots on so that was alright. :) Got to the blind and there were no cranes in the pen :( But then, five minutes later, 5 cranes came flying into view!! One landed in the pen ... read more

First day of work! Woke up a little after 6, which was only annoying because I kept waking up throughout the night. Probably too excited/nervous. Haha. Anyway, got up, had breakfast with Ingrid and then we headed over to the headquarters at 7. Basically just had orientation today, which was actually nice. Although I loved Nevada I was kinda jealous of the fact that I never got an orientation, while the interns after me did. So yeah. Lauren and Scott gave us some paperwork and then Lauren told us a bit about the job and gave us a tour of the headquarters area and in and around the fire center. Got to meet many of the other people on site, who all seem nice. It was kind of an overload of information, but Lauren was away ... read more

Well hello again everyone! Time for a brand new blog to begin!! :) This time, this is coming to ya'll from Mississippi! Here goes. Tuesday afternoon mom and I started our road trip and we made it down to the refuge by 3pm on Thursday! The drive was lots of fun... many laughs. :) And bring able to alternate drivers every few hours was a big help. On Tuesday we drove through 5 states (NJ, PA, MD, WV, VA), wednesday we went through 4 states (VA, TN, GA, AL), and Thursday we were only in 2 states (AL and MS)! We were amused because at one point we had a bathroom stop in Trenton... georgia. lol. See, it takes very little to amuse us. Anyway, that Trenton was much prettier than ours. Thursday we stopped by ... read more
