You know that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you have screwed up and bad? Like an upset stomach but harder, like there is a weight in there. Usually caused by yourself. Like when you do something that is completely moronic and you can’t take it back or fix it? And when it is 110% your fault. Yeah, I am hoping that feeling will pass soon. The last day of vacation started off great. We were up early and had everything cleaned up at the house and packed. Did a couple of errands before heading to the airport, including mailing the keys for the rental house back to the owner (remember this). The check in for the rental car was smooth, no line up to check our bags, and remarkably, all of our bags ... read more

Our youngest son has been asking all along when we'll get to Minnesota. He says it's his favorite state because its name sounds like a soft drink. We didn't have any Minne-soda, but we did have a great visit with previous China co-workers and their two little girls. It was such fun to see them on their home turf and learn about new interests and skills they're developing. Once again we were the recipients of great hospitality. I realize we can never repay many of these friends so I am having to learn to receive it with gratitude and as fuel for the future. We joined our friends on a trip to the library, which we love and miss in China. We also each got a great haircut...thanks! Sunday we went to downtown Minneapolis to attend ... read more

Readers of my blog know that I think visiting other countries and immersing oneself in their culture is truly a wonderful thing and something I love dearly. However, taking the time to see your own environment is equally important. Whether it's having your adult children bring pumpkins over to your house to carve (and maintain a family tradition), taking the time to visit a small local festival, or exploring your own state and appreciating the beauty of Autumn, taking advantage of local opportunities is important too. I hope these photos give you a sense of Minnesota this time of year. We are blessed to have four wonderful seasons. OK, I admit that winter loses its appeal after four, five, or six months of snow and cold, but it makes us appreciate the wonders of spring, summer, ... read more

Hello from Minneapolis, Minnesota (For those who are curious, in the native Sioux "minni" means water; "sotah" means "sky tinted" or "cloudy". Therefore Minnesota means cloudy water, based on the color of the river). So along with really murky water, what is Minneapolis known for?? The biggest mall in the United States!! So of course we had to check out the Mall of America, and what a sight. Right in the middle of the mall what would you expect there to be, I don't know shops, stores, kiosks, maybe a food court?? Nope, a full size amusement park. Nickelodeon is the corporate sponsor of the Mall of America and has transformed all the rides to be based on t.v. shows that the company produces, Scooby Doo has a ride, Sponge Bob, even Dora the Explorer. ... read more

We got into the campground near the twin cities, Minneapolis, St. Paul, on the 7th of July. We spent three days there visiting with Sharyn"s family. We went to dinner with Ted, her brother, the second night. The Next day we joined her twin, Shirley, youngest sister Patti, at brother Jim"s Home. Brothers Barry and Dave also were there. Barry is a twin to the oldest sister, Barb, who could not attend. Various spouces were also there. During the day on the eighth while doingm a little maintenance on the camper, I hit my head and required 6 stiches to fix. Except for the embarassment, all is well now. We left the cities for Peqote Lakes, MN. We always rent a cabin on a nice fishing lake where my family went for vacations, starting when I ... read more

We are leaving the frozen wasteland of Minnesota USA with a projected temperature of 6 Farenheit (-16 C) and we should see temperatures in Bankok when we arrive tomorrow of about 93 Farenheit (38 C). A bit of a change, eh. It should be just the ticket to sooth these achy old bones. Loren and I (Hal) have been traveling together and trading insults for over 20 years. Most of our travels have taken us backpacking through Mexico. You gotta wonder, how do these guys remain friends. Well, here's an example of Loren's travel stories, in his own words: While on a recent driving trip alone, I decided to make a stop at one of those rest areas on the side of the road. I went into the washroom. The first stall was taken so I ... read more

Winter is in full swing here in Minnesota. I love that we have had two big snowstorms already in December! and we're in the midst of the Christmas Blizzard of 2009. I don't need to dream of a white Christmas, it's here! I've been home in Minneapolis for over a year now, and thought I'd blog about my transition back home and what's next for me. I have many blog entries to type up from my travels in 2008. One of these days I'll get around to typing up my travel journal. Meanwhile, some insights and highlights from 2008-2009. I left China at the end of August 2008. After several weeks traveling thru Russia via Trans-Siberian train, then crossing Europe to visit friends in Germany, Scotland and England. I finally hit US soil on 1 Oct ... read more

How do you define traveling? Some countries or thoughts that may come to mind include: Sierra Leone, scuba diving off of Belize, or perhaps a family vacation to Europe. I partly define traveling by a change in my state of mind, where I am transported into such a different environment that I learn to see people, ideas, cultures, languages, religious, notions and ways of doing things differently. This is not surprising, given that when you travel, you may surprise yourself: you may learn that you are much more open than you thought you were; you may also learn that you can really learn to salsa dance like the Hispanic women do. You may learn your limits, your frustrations, or that little things about your foreign roommates really bother you…You may find things that give you joy, ... read more
