ROC It Forward in Karagwe

Team ETI is headed to Tanzania today. This time our goals are 3-fold:

1. Bask in the glow of the KARUCO Dedication (Oct 2017 with ten present from Team ETI);

2. Get updates on Karagwe University College - KARUCO; and

3. Moving the Rural Opportunity Center (KARUCO extension) concept forward.



The team this time is Jan Hansen of ETI (me) and Bruce Engel of BURO Engel Architects (NY).

Bruce and I will meet in Amsterdam and fly together to Tanzania. I look forward to introducing Bruce to our partners in Tanzania - the ELCT and to help put a face on the KARUCO project. Bruce was the architect largely responsible for the design and function of the Women's Opportunity Centers in Rwanda just a short distance from Karagwe (although difficult to reach by ground transport due to terrain and lack of roads in Karagwe). It promises to be a rewarding trip.

a. Nyakahanga Hospital satellite

b. AIDS program

c. Maternal health



4. MARKET HUB

a. Food processing (General Mills; Cargill; Land O’ Lakes)

b. Business Start Ups (Bricks-BE; Compost toilets-BE; Biofuel stoves, bee-keeping, solar Installations – EVS/Kim, Hansen; Rotary)

c. Cooperatives of all kinds (Ag)



5. PLACE FOR TRACTOR AND IMPLEMENT CHECK OUT

a. Tractor (KAD is establishing a list of implements and budgets to cover costs of fuel, operator, maintenance and repair.

b. Plow and other implements

ROC TASK FORCE (BOARD)

Groups in each community will be represented on the ROC Task Force (Board). Members will include but not be limited to: 1) General Secretary, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Karagwe Diocese (land-owner); 2) KARUCO Farm Manager (exension); 3) Karagwe District Agricultural Officer (government); 4) Karagwe District Administrative Officer (government); and others as determined.
