Well, unfortunately I don't have the luxary of hitting a pause button on my life here while simultaneously preparing to move to Costa Rica - so my blog entries are a bit on the lean side. I am very much hoping to change that once I'm moved and settled - fingers crossed. Luckily tonight I had an extra few minutes to catch you all up on my progress. It has occurred to me, as my husband and I have been working hard to get ready to go, that the things we're researching and arranging wouldn't be exclusive to moving to Costa Rica specifically. So if you are looking for a general checklist for how to relocate to another country, here it is in a nutshell. 1. How can I live there, legally for 1 year? My ... read more

Having the kids learn Spanish could be accomplished in a number of ways, and many of them do not involve moving to a foreign county. There are many different foreign language programs available that can be used from your own home, including many excellent programs available for free on the Internet. In terms of schools, there are a variety of immersion schools popping up, including some in the Twin Cities area, that could have offered the language education we're seeking for the kids. So why move? And why move to Costa Rica in particular? Choosing to go live in Costa Rica for a year wasn't a random decision. We have many reasons for making Costa Rica our temporary home. First, my husband's mother is from Costa Rica. She was born there and grew up there and ... read more

The countdown is officially on, today is November 1 and that means we're exactly two months from moving day! On January 1, 2013 my kids and I are moving to Costa Rica, where we will stay for one year. The kids are being enrolled in a private bilingual school so that they can learn Spanish and we'll be renting a house nearby. And my plan is to document our experience, beginning with the planning stage (right now). As I mentioned, we've settled on a school and a place to live. We also recently booked our flights! So that leaves two months to figure out a suitable vehicle to use, decide what we're taking with us and make our final preparations. Piece of cake, right? I'll admit, when I first told the kids about this whole moving ... read more

We left Sundance thinking we might stop somewhere in the eastern part of South Dakota. We did stop but only for a few fireworks. The weather was fine until we hit Windom and then the clouds thickened, darkened, and the wind picked up. We turned on the radio to a Mankato station as the kids said there were tornado sirens going off in Mankato. We ended up pulling off into St. James and parking in the community camp ground. A couple tents were already overturned. We even had to close our vents because of the force of the wind and rain. After 20 minutes or so, we could see sunlight in the west. However, the closer we got to Mankato, the more it darkened again in the southwest. I took a couple pictures of the storm ... read more

Yesterday we left Sparta, Wisconsin the BICYCLE CAPITAL OF AMERCIA (where we never saw one single bicycle---does a jogging stroller count?) We had gone 7610.2 miles when we left Sparta. We crossed the Mississipi too many times to count all day as we wound our way in and out of WI and Minnesota. We crossed the Chippewa River into Pepin County and finally arrived in Pepin, population 878 at 1:38 p.m., 70 degrees. We stopped in the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and then drove down to Lake Pepin which sure looked different than when I ice skated across it 6 years ago on New Year's Day. The we stopped at a local produce stand and munched on blueberries, raspberries, and the sweetest peach I can ever remember savoring (we fought over the last bite) and then ... read more

We are at the end of this project, and like the end of all of them, at this point it feels like it just rushed to this day. We’ve been waiting and waiting for the day when we’d get to go home and see the kids (read: grandkids!) and then all of a sudden it’s tomorrow, and there are things that we didn’t get done, or didn’t get to do yet. But the main thing is that tomorrow we’re leaving, and heading home! The men have finished the floor, except for grouting the last little bit. They laid nearly 5000 six inch tiles. If you’re keeping track, that’s 24 days of them on their knees…and those knees are complaining! But the floor looks wonderful, and the camp director is so pleased with it. The women ... read more

We arrived in Mankato early today (around 2:00) and rested. We will probably have to ride in the rain on Tuesday, but we only have about 350 miles to go to Rockford, Il. on Tuesday. Each day Grace and I have some scripture to look at and contemplate about journeys depicted in scripture. It seems every movement of God involves journey and travel. Nothing worthwhile ever occured in scripture without someone taking a risk and taking a journey to accomplish it. Journeys sometimes involved someone going someplace special like Noah (who was really just adrift) or Abraham where God told him to GO, but gave him no specific destination. In each case, they either responded with a "Here I am Lord, Send Me!" like in Isaiah 6 or "I think I'm getting out of here!" like ... read more

Hello to all our blog-eyed friends & family, Sorry we haven't kept you up as we should; ATT isn't as strong in these here parts. Anyway, I'll backtrack 2 days so you won't have missed anything. Let's start out in mid-South Dakota at Walls Drug Store. It is a site not to be missed. A pharmacist & his wife came there in 1931, but had a tough time making a go of it. His wife got the bright idea of giving out free ice water to travelers to encourage them to stop and put signs out on the highway. Of course it worked and is still working...lots of signs, 5 cent coffee, food, gifts, oh yes and drugs and ice water. It is worth a stop! Had to get on the interstate 90, but got off ... read more

Welcome to "planning and preparation" update number two.... Classes are officially over at MSU. Thesis turned in, and Steph's graduation garb is pressed and ready to go. Three workdays left on the calendar. For most, this would be a time to cut loose and celebrate! For us, it is time to get down to business. We have until May 13th to finish purchasing, rationing, and packaging our expedition food, gathering the necessary gear for our trip, to say goodbye to our friends, and pack up and move out of our apartment. We're surprised that no one has started a pool on how many hours of sleep we'll be getting this week! Since our last update, we have had many exciting developments: We recently made a trip to the St. Peter Co-Op to make some enormous bulk ... read more
