Yesterday was our last long road trip to the 50 states. We have reached 48. Unknowingly, we learned from our Pink Jeep tour guide that Arizona was the 48th state to join the union and it was our 48th state to travel. If we flip flopped our last two trips and went to Alaska before Hawaii, Hawaii would be our 50th and was the 50th to join the union. I don’t think we will do that because Alaska will be a longer summer trip and it will be our finale for Ben’s graduation. Next year, we will go to Hawaii. On our drive from Columbia to home, we began reflecting on where we started and where we are today and how so many things are different. The most obvious difference being the sizes of the kids. ... read more

This week has been a crazy one as we head into our next road trip adventure. My dad has been in and out of the hospital and is currently in. We don’t know what is wrong exactly. Ben has had his drivers test (he is an official driver now). Well, he still has to go to the Secretary of State but we don’t have time now. The other two have had drama and baseball after school. Ben has had some AP History test practices in the evenings. I am trying to wrap my mind around this trip and packing. Months ago, I booked all of our hotels being that it is spring break for many. I booked some of our activities like Alcatraz, Warner Brothers and the Pink Jeep tours. We have a house rented near ... read more

We are home! There are amazing things that come out of these trips. The learning moments discovered by fights/arguments, being in close quarters for a long time, learning about spending money, checking into hotels, solving problems, changing plans on a dime, being disappointed, seeing how others live in the same country, trying different kinds of foods and so much more. We are never sure if our kids get the impact of these trips and bonding as a family but Ben wrote a paper for school that I found in his stuff (he never showed us) which validated everything we hope for. See pictures below. Another amazing thing is how each stop we make feels like a whole different trip each time. Once we get and the car and drive, it feels like that last stop was ... read more

Geo: 42.5624, -83.1545Here I sit on the precipice of our third family adventure. Underwear, socks, movies, snacks, Twas the night before travel and all through house not a creature was helping. Not even my spouse (just kidding. it rhymes). .The socks were being laundered with care,In hopes that I finish the laundry in there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of travel danced in their heads. And mamma was planning, and dad took a nap.I booked all the hotels and activities and crap. When out on the driveway there arose such a clatter,I ran right outside to see what was the matter.Away to the van I flew like a flash,Opened the garage, what made the crash.I didn't see anything, I still didn't know,I looked all around. Geo: 42.5624, -83.1545I have spent the last year mapping out our next road trip across the US. We are very excited once again. We will be traveling to some south/southwestern states. We will travel for 16 days in our beast, our conversion van. We have enjoyed our van over the past couple of years. It is quite comfortable and room. It is actually very easy to drive. This year, our new states are Tennesee, Arkansas, Oaklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. Some states we will spend the night and have a meal while others we will find some local activities to give us a flavor for the state/city. I use tripadvisor for ideas, tips as well as reviews on activities. It has been very helpful. I also use Roadtrippers app to map our my ... read more

Geo: 42.6056, -83.1499On Saturday the 26th, we left Ottawa and headed for Huntsville, for a visit with friends. It was a beautiful drive through farm country with fields of golden wheat, fields of young corn stalks, fields where seed cast a golden haze over the tall green shoots of grass, and fields where it had been harvested and large round bales of hay lay drying under the not-so-sunny skies. And fields of neon yellow, where mustard was growing, were almost blinding to the eye. Black and silver silos adorned the white farmhouses and red barns and cows grazed in some of the fields on dairy farms. And where there were no farms, there was dense foliage like that found in New England…pine and spruce and maple in various shades of green broken by spears of white ... read more
