So on my limited time off and throughout the semester, I have been trying to figure out what I would like to do in each country. I have never been over to any of this area before, so I've been trying to go off of advice from others who have traveled to these countries. Through the program, we as students can go one field experience trips that Semester at Sea organizes and leads. As of now, we were only able to sign up for the first three countries; Spain, Italy, and Croatia. There were a ton of options, but for now this is what I have signed up for through Semester at Sea: Barcelona: City Orientation Tour on the first day we get there. Barcelona: The Autisme la Garriga Project http://www.autisme.com/autism/ Dubrovnik, Croatia: Scuba diving and ... read more

My 30th birthday? Did I want a party? Who knows me? As much as I love my friends and family, and love spending time with them, I'd rather have a weekend trip exploring someplace new. My parents and I decided to go up to Traverse City, Michigan for a few days. We went to wineries, the fabulous Tandem Cider, lighthouses, old bars, and beaches. It was a great time.... read more

So as I sit here on my weekend off in beautiful rainy Northern Michigan, I start to freak out that I have less than 3 weeks to go until I board the MV Explorer and start this journey with Semester at Sea. So I made a to-do list for this weekend so that I'm not doing it all in the one week I have at home before we head to the Bahamas: 1. Make a blog (check) 2. Order my books 3. Buy a world map to put on my wall to track my trip 4. Start reading my required text for class (not going to happen) 5. Learn how to speak Spanish and Italian Now as we know, half of those probably won't happen, but it's good to have goals right? Anyways, now I'm going ... read more

We spent the summer in Traverse City, Michigan. A lovely town on the shores of Lake Michigan, Traverse City is home to a nationally recognized Film Festival, a Cherry Festival, and a whole host of recreational, cultural, and gastronomic opportunities. The Moody Blues were one of the featured summer concerts at the Interlachen Center for the Arts nearby, and we definitely enjoyed the show. Mark, Heidi, and Alex vacationed in northern Michigan in early July, so we got to spend some time with them as well. Diane made a cherry pie for Alex’s third birthday and we had a little cookout to celebrate. We also made some very nice new friends—Kent and Phyllis, Tom and Nancy, Marv and Alicia, Ken and Suzanne, and Pete and Denise, to name a few. We had lunch with friends Ken ... read more

Well we were blessed with another great day. We went to downtown Traverse City because we wanted to see the sights down there and also check out a little place called House of Doggs. They serve all kinds of hotdogs and it sounds kind of funky and fun. Downtown Traverse City is very old and has a lot of shops and restaurants. They do a really good job restoring all of these towns and making them friendly and fun to hang out in. The House of Doggs was really good if you like hot dogs. They had many different combinations already made up or you could make your own. I had an R&B dog (mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, pickles, & chili) and Don had Country dog (chili, mustard, ketchup, onions, pickles). They both were very good. Too ... read more

So today we took a drive along M-22 which meanders around beautiful Lake Michigan. It passes through a few little towns and is lined with houses on both sides of the road. There are some spectacular ones and then some that I think we could afford. Either way, it was very scenic and beautiful. It is hard to believe that everything freezes up here in the winter. We stopped in the little town of Suttons Bay and walked around some of the shops. We bought a couple of sandwiches at a deli as it was getting close to the noon hour and then we drove a little way up the road to a park to have lunch. It was nice and peaceful watching the blue water eating our yummy sandwiches. We then traveled through cherry orchards ... read more

I came to the Traverse city last August. It was scary! I met my host-family in the airport: Host-Dad and mom. I wanted to go straight to my new home and go to bed :D I was so tired after flying, but we went out for dinner. It was beautiful weather in that day! I have done a lot since I came here so I am not going to write everything here, but I was part of swimming- and downhill skiing team in my High school. Now I am playing tennis in my high school´s team. "Traverse city central high school -trojans" ... read more

Tim and I decided that a lovely road trip to northern Michigan would be a terrific way to spend July 4th weekend. We stopped along the way to see my mother, brother and his family in Crown Pointe, IN. My brother has two boys, Jake (7) and Ryan (5). We had a great visit, and enjoyed some good ole' fashion Indiana garage sitting (see photos). The next day we travel up to spend the night with my dad and stepmom in Grand Rapids, and then continued the trip "Up North" to Elk Rapids, MI. Tim's dad and stepmother have a beautiful cottage on Bass Lake where we relaxed, met Raven (new puppy) and enjoyed the company of family. Tim's sister, Leigh Anne, was also visiting from Orlando, FL. We drove to Mackinaw City and met Tim's ... read more
