This campground was located right next to the Tahquamenon River. The first night we drove up to the Whitefish Point lighthouse and saw the Northern Lights off of Lake Superior. There are two beautiful but separate waterfalls. The water is amber color like root beer due to the tannic acid of the hemlock trees. We tried to bike a local foot trail but had to turn around after it became too difficult to traverse. Our camphosts, John and Karin (from Texas) and camp neighbors Holly and Jodie (from Michigan) were delightful neighbors.... read more

Due to a scheduling error on our part, we boondocked at this popular ATV trailhead for two nights. It is located about one mile from the main road. The access road is rough dirt and sand. A bridge sign restricted vehicles over 3 tons per axle (our RV is over 5 tons per axle) from passing but there was no way to turn around. Oops! Lois woke early and saw the Northern Lights around 4am. Mike was glad we didn’t get stuck in the sand or damage the bridge.... read more

Yesterday, after a late breakfast, we crossed the Mackinaw Bridge and drove into the Upper Peninsula. Our surroundings quickly turned to forest and soon wilderness. There were almost no signs of people, and any shops we did see were closed down. On our drive to Tahquamenon Falls, I think we saw two gas stations and a small handful of dilapidated buildings. I was thankful we'd filled our tank in Mackinaw City because there really wasn't much to stop at for quite a distance. I’d made reservations for us to camp in the Lower Falls area of Tahquamenon. Portage was the name of our campground area, and it was only about a mile hike to the Lower Falls. Unfortunately for us, the temperatures were unusually warm for the area. It was over 90 degrees!
