We left our base in Ohio to head to Kalamazoo for nephew Addison's marriage to his love Kari. It was a lovely ceremony and reception. Fun time with some of our family before we head west. Kalamazoo, which means "boiling water" or "reflecting" is the original home of the Upjohn Co., Stryker Corp, Checker Motors Corp. (cab maker), and Gibson Guitars. We camped at Markin Glen County Park. We enjoyed a walk around the lake and the sound of trains on a nearby track.... read more

Okay. So I don’t know how to blog!!! Apparently creating a new ”Trip” doesn’t do anything. I just realized that all of my previous blog entries (entries I added for trips such as Destin and Buffalo River) have been added onto the end of my original blog for my and Elizabeth’s trip to Europe. Worse, I can’t figure out how to do anything else… So, I am going to just keep doing it the wrong way and hopefully everyone can at least se some pics. The trip actually started on Wednesday July 21st. We drove two days to get to Kalamazoo, MI so that Friday morning we could go over to the Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum to see, among their regular exhibits, a WW II B-29 Superfortress named Doc. Doc was great to see, ... read more

We had some extra time on Saturday afternoon, so we decided to see if there were any racetracks in the area. Low and behold, we found one right down the road. Literally, right down the road we were staying on, like six miles away. AND it was rice night! Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and rained us o… But we got to see a little racing and we had a lot of fun.... read more

I woke at eight this morning, broke my fast, showered, dressed and made it out the door by nine as planned. The weather was quite nice as I walked to the bus stop; warm with a light mist. The ride up to the station was uneventful and I arrived at the ticket counter at 9:45as instructed. I presented the woman behind the counter with my ticket order number and confirmed my information. I was also asked for the password which I had created when ordering. Luckily I had I recorded it in my notebook but this seems like overkill to me. I think providing identification and the card used in the transaction makes rather more sense. After receiving my tickets for both today and Monday my backpack was weighed and tagged. I then settled in for ... read more

I’m contemplating catching a bus to Alpena, which is costly only in terms of time; in the neighborhood of ten hours, one way. The trip takes between four or five hours in an automobile, so ten is rather discouraging. I checked the Grey Hound website and found a round trip ticket to be $109. If I head up on Friday and come back Monday I would have to days in town so the trip would definitely fall within my budget of $400. I spent most of the day debating whether I should bite the bullet and head up. The two travel days would likely be unpleasant yet the other two would be fun, serving as a nice mini-vacation prior to the start of fall term. I eventually decided to go for it, paid for my ticket ... read more

Fantasy football draft weekend is rapidly approaching which explains the message on my phone this morning: “are you planning on skyping the draft?” The message sent by my friend Phil was in response to my having told him earlier it was doubtful I would be able to travel to Alpena and attend in person. My girlfriend and I have rented an auto four of the six years that Phil’s league has competed, while the other two years I had Skyped it in. My girlfriend is in currently in California visiting her mother so I wasn’t about to rent a car myself due to the cost. While Skype is the obvious economical choice, spending the afternoon alone, watching the rest of the lads enjoy themselves is far from appealing.... read more

FEARLESS DICK The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the work of a couple of Russian guys from Tbilisi named Seversky and Kartveli. They immigrated to the US to flee the Bolsheviks because Joe Stalin did not trust aeronautical engineers. His best engineers often found themselves pounding rocks in Siberia whenever one of their planes crashed. It started out to be the Seversky P-35. In one of its early versions it was the P-43 Lancer of which a few were brought into service. Colonel Robert L. Scott flew a Lancer to photograph the top of Mt Everest in the Himalayas. The Thunderbolt hit its stride as the P-47D, and a great many were produced. It was the largest, heaviest, and most expensive piston engine fighter in history. Fully loaded it weighed over 8 tons. It must ... read more

Alarm went off at 4:30 and we were on the road by 5:30. Thanks, Freddy, for setting it loudly for the Bad to the Bone! For once, all the kids went back to sleep fairly reunion. Can’t mess with that! Made good time through to Cleveland where we stopped at The Melt Bar and Grill. The kids love to watch Man vs Food and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, so we wanted to hit a few places across the country where they have been filmed. Both shows have visited this place that specializes in over the top grilled cheese sandwiches. When we arrived, we were told it would be a 1 to 1.5 hr wait (gasp!) even though it was 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon! We contemplated leaving or taking it to go, but were optimistic that ... read more

Back with Allison, I help her move to a new apartment that she shares with two brothers who brew their own beer. Not to mention the two pools... More old faces keep popping up at a party where I am introduced to the great game of beer pong. Interestingly one gets better at it the more one drinks. Or so I've been told... apart from interesting expressions like the one in the title and beer pong, peppermint patty enters my repartois of alcoholic drinks: open your mouth and let strange people pour chocolate sirup and peppermint liquor into it, repeat if desired.... read more

The next reunion occurs , when Amanda picks me up. Not only was she one of my closest friends when in MI, but she also still has my year book. So, when we chill out at her house later on to look at the "old" pictures, I make a scary discovery: Two thirds of all the people I went to school with are now one or more of the following: Married, divorced, have children, own a house, engaged, or serving in the military. Growing up here sure is a lot different. While at Amanda and Keith's house, my Wii skills improve as well as my Austrian cooking skills. Unfortunately one can't really hang out outside of the house, as the smell of the Amish' cattle that live next door is overwhelming (and not in a good ... read more
