As promised, I will share the journey of the unfortunate kitten that was found on the side of the road. Slowly but surely, she is returning to good health. I promised I would not give her a name, because I would feel obliged to keep her. Unfortunately, that only lasted a week. Her name is "Buttercup" (or "Butter" for short). I still will not keep her, but intend to give her to someone who will provide her with a good home and lots of attention. Today you will be able to view photos of this kitten two days after she was found. The photos are not "pretty", but as I update you on her journey, you will be astounded at the changes you see. I know I am. ... read more

I had planned on doing a little more blogging, but I have had a little unexpected surprise. I have recently come across a small kitten who was placed in a box and thrown onto the side of a road in a more rural portion of the city. The kitten was extremely sick, weighing only three pounds and having a severe upper respiratory infection. Being an animal lover (having two cats and a dog of my own), I was moved with pity for such a sick little critter. Consequently, I took this little one into my possession, got it to a veterinarian, and paid for some treatment. It is amazing how something so small (and not even your own) can cost so much money and time. Nonetheless, she is slowly coming back. I am hoping to ... read more

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my birthplace, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids is located about thirty minutes from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. The city was first inhabited by the Ottawa Indians, who settled along the banks of the Grand River. The city was settled by French fur traders in about 1826. Grand Rapids was originally known as the Nation's Furniture Capital because of its excellent lumber industry, and it is still known for its many national and multi-national headquarters including Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth, Alticor (formerly Amway), Wolverine World Wide, and Meijer stores. Large immigrant populations from Poland, the Netherlands, and other European countries settled in metropolitan Grand Rapids in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They brought with them a variety of skills and traditions, which ... read more

I would like to introduce to you David Rule, my traveling companion. David will be joining me in the study abroad program at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. This is David's first time traveling abroad. He is quite excited about studying in Poland, as his ancestors also immigrated to the United States from Poland many years ago. I am trying to convince him to start his own travel blog. Whether or not he choses to do so, I am sure you hear from him from time to time on my blog. ... read more

Happy Polish Constitution Day! Today I begin my travel blog. I am preparing to travel to Krakow, Poland, where I will be studying Polish language and culture at the Jagiellonian University. I realize that I will not be leaving for two months, but I would like to start introducing others to the journey on which I will soon embark. I am looking forward to both the planning and the actual time I will spend in the country from which my family came. I hope you will join me as I tell you my story and share with with you my latest endeavors. ... read more

I have a few things to finish up with before I leave and I’ve been consistently anxious about this whole thing. A while ago I was nervous that I wouldn’t get to go at all, but facing the reality of it has become another thing to fret over. It’s not the actual trip I’m worried about at this point; it’s the looming hassle of straggling bits of paperwork and formalities I dread for the next ten days. I’ve got this hesitancy to leave and I’m anxious to go at the same time. I’ve been assured of the near universal kindness of strangers— especially in Ghana. I keep telling myself that I’ve got friends there waiting for me; we just don’t know each other yet. The director of their international program is an English professor and a ... read more

Piles of unfilled boxes sit against the furniture in the living room and I have a whole day off to fill them. This is where my trip begins, with packing, not one of my favorite activities but one that must be done nontheless. I have about three weeks to pack up all my belongings and store them before I leave for Italy January 17th. I will be flying out of Grand Rapids which will make the whole airport deal a whole lot easier. I don't think it has quite hit me yet, I am going to be living abroad for four whole months in Rome! And even though I will be studying at the John Cabot Univeristy, I'll still have plenty of time to roam around the city. I will be updating this journal throughout my ... read more

I write this from the coffeeshop I work at downtown Grand Rapids. We're called Bitter End, believe it or not. Mocha in hand, I greet you who actually might read this with a smile. I've worked here our inaugural summer and somehow managed to keep the job while I'm still finishing up school this year. I'm a music education major at Grand Valley State University and I'm in my 5th year...the student teaching year. Right now my placement is in an elementary/general music classroom K-5 and for the winter semester, I'll be at East Kentwood High School with one of the choir directors there. I'm a music person. Anyone else who considers themselves a "music person" will understand what I mean when I say that. Teaching music isn't just a job to me...it's a lifestyle. I ... read more
