Well since we last blogged we have driven right across Maine into New Hampshire and into Vermont where we turned south and headed down the length of Vermont into Massachusetts and finally into Connecticut. This whole area is colloquially referred to as New England. The reason for us being in this neck of the woods…and I mean this correctly “ Neck of the woods” was to see a bit of the annual “leaf fall” when the whole place changes colour from green to yellows and reds and is supposed to look amazing. Well as I said in an earlier blog The locals were saying that it was not a good year. I think the locals are being a little bit “picky” because we have been treated to an absolutely amazing display of colour over the last ... read more

Part 1 I moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2006 to be near my daughter and her family. I am happy here. The kids have grown from needy 2 and 5 year olds to independent 11 and 14 year olds. I have my own little house which is a perfect size (read that as comfy chairs, serene bedroom and a tiny kitchen). I have friends to swim with, write with, speak Spanish with, travel with, go to dinner, movies or plays with...I have a good life here. Still, every year I have a longing and need to return 'home' to Massachusetts where I lived for sixty-four years. Yes, I am a Yankee in the south. My need is centered on the deep friendships I had there, the different terrain- from the mountains to the ocean, and my ... read more

I had major flashbacks to my UK trip this morning on the train from Grand Central to White Plains New York to pick up our rental car. Time for the best part of the trip! Our Mazda 5 looks like a mini-minivan, but gave us plenty of room for our luggage (...and lots of souvenirs). Within the first 30mins of our trip we had already found our first adventure—Sleepy Hollow! My family used to watch the cartoon version of Sleepy Hollow and I fell in love with that goofy Ichabod Crain. This was very necessary detour. Normally I have things very planned when I travel, but this trip was loosely mapped out and we have just decided things as we go. It's both stressful and exciting at the same time. The city is pretty small and ... read more

This is another sad story of a beautiful little village. Last week Hurricane Irene decimated Shelburne Falls (pop. 1,800)where I lived for 6 years and many of the other small towns in that area including Colrain (pop 1,500) where I lived for 42 years. Roads, houses, and bridges were damaged, washed away, or suffered structural damage rendering them unsafe. One little town, Hawley (pop. 500 + or -) is completely isolated because of washed out roads. Supplies are being helicopted in to them but since the roads have washed out it is almost impossible to even get to the supplies. There are no stores, gas stations, or ways to get anything. The National Guard is set up at the local high school( 20+ miles away) and using military vehicles to navigate the forests and streams. The ... read more

We left Williamstown and the Clark and meandered east along Route 2 the Mohawk Trail. It was the first time in years that I had driven this route through the Berkshires. It was sad to see whats happened to so many of the old tourist stops along the road. These shops were the life line for this area and are either in poor condition or had completely gone out of business. Those old "View Six States From Here" and trinket buying spots just aren't surviving. This graceful driving road has certainly lost it's intrigue to the interstate. I guess I must be part of the problem. We stopped at the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls. This is an old train bridge over the Deerfield river and connects Shelburne Falls with the town of Buckland. The ... read more
