On Saturday the 24th of August, Sally and I took a day trip with friends to the town of Salem Massachusetts. Sally kept saying that we were going to find us a witch. Salem was a town we had read about but with it being so near it sounded like it would be an interesting day trip. One of the first sights that we saw in Salem was the House of the Seven Gables. The house was built in 1668 by Captain John Turner and was the inspiration for the book of the same name by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Right next door is the birthplace of Hawthorne built about 1750 and relocation to the site of the House of the Seven Gables in 1958. We also visited 'The Burying Point' which is the oldest cemetery in Salem ... read more

We store Pavane in winter at the Brewer yard in East Greenwich and, because of this, we get a good discount on slips and moorings at other Brewers yards. At the full price of $55, the moorings here at Hawthorne Cove are the most expensive we have encountered this season. The Brewers yard here at Hawthorne Cove is perfectly fine and the quarter-mile walk into town is pleasant. But Pickering Wharf marina is right in the town center. If you enjoy being on an in-town dock surrounded by restaurants and tourists, this is the place! You can sit on deck and watch the tourists dining a few feet away. And they can watch you ... :-) If you rent a mooring from Pickering Wharf, their launch will bring you right into downtown. Your actual mooring however ... read more

Saturday is another sunny morning. We are continuing to head “Down East”. Today, we are going to Salem, located on what is known as “Boston’s North Shore”. We head due North past the imposing Minots Ledge Lighthouse and then out across Massachusetts Bay. Boston is to our West about 15 miles away, shrouded in light mist. From a distance, the two massive chimneys of the Salem power station provide a good point to aim for. But this is not a good navigation strategy when you get close to shore because the direct route goes through, or over the top of, Marblehead Neck ... :-) The waters outside Salem Harbor are littered with small islands and large rocks. There are so many different channels and channel markers that it is quite confusing, even with GPS and good ... read more

After debating where to go while visiting Boston we decided to go to Salem First. Took the short but confusing drive to Salem, finally made to Salem after missing the round about 2 times since the marking on the streets are pretty much non existing. Made it to Salem, visited the visitor center, toured the city by ourselves, visited the Witch Memorial, and this was actually pretty humble experience to see how they die & why. Visited one of the museums & then went to the Lobster Shanty, this place is actually pretty good. After almost a full day in Salem we took out long drive to Cape cod and to our hotel in South Yarmouth. South Yarmouth is a nice little town in Cape Cod, we stayed at the Smuggler at the Beach, The weather ... read more

Geo: 42.5224, -70.8958First priority next day was to get Peter's phone equipped with a USA simcard to avoid paying O2 £6 a megabyte for data, sounds simple but involved long phone calls and a trip to a T-Mobile store. Following which we set off for Fenway Park (the Boston RedSox venue) to make a start on Barny's shopping list - only to start off in the wrong direction resulting in a ride on the Metro (T) to get back to where we needed to be. Then we walked further to get a bite to eat at the cafe in the Isabella Gardner Museum but then, daunted at the prospect of paying $15 ($10) each to get in we crossed to the Fine Art Museum where Annies membership card got us in free. Principal interest was the ... read more

Back towards Boston again. There were a few thing planned for my leisure, but the forces of weather weren’t really on my side today. We, that is Terry and I, decided to head in to Salem. I’ve heard so much of this (in)famous place and have always been interested in the history of the Salem witch-trials. So Salem it is. The drive there wasn’t as bad this time since I now have my GPS, which is really appreciated. It helps out quite a lot and I would recommend anyone travelling in the bigger cities to invest in one. I’m usually saying that I am never lost. I always know exactly where I am. I am >>here... read more

We're going to upload this blog from yesterday now but add the pictures later or tomorrow at some point. We are in New York now but the internet here is a bit questionable, so we will write/upload today's events later too . This is what we wrote yesterday but have only just had chance to upload: Today, we woke up relatively early at around 8am, as we had planned a trip to the town of Salem. We put on some clothes and went down for breakfast before going back to the room to get ready properly. We checked online for the best/cheapest way to get to Salem, and noticed that there was a bus that went there from Haymarket station, which would be much cheaper than taking a train there. After checking bus times, we set ... read more

Whilst we were staying in Boston we took a day trip out to the infamous town of Salem. Our intention had been to take the ferry each way but when we discovered that a train ran from just down the road from our hotel, it seemed a much better idea. It even seemed that our week pass for the "T" public transport system covered the trip but on the return journey the guard told us that we should have paid - but she let us off!! The train drops you off just outside the town but it's not difficult to find your way into the centre from where the heritage trail is clearly marked by a red line to follow around. It's a nice little place full of lovely old buildings, some of which actually date ... read more

Today was the last day of our New England trip. We left Boothbay Harbor early to ensure we would be able to fit in a stop in Salem to visit some of the witch related attractions. There definitely was not enough time spent here in Maine to fully appreciate it all. In all, we were probably only in the state less than 24 hours! Before leaving, we stopped by the harbor to take a few photos but the bone chilling cold of the morning forced the stop to be a rather quick one. Driving down the Maine turnpike and into New Hampshire, we finally arrived in Salem, Massachusetts around 11. We parked our car in a parking garage and started walking to find the Salem Witch Museum. After looking at a map, I saw that we ... read more

Robyn and I went to Salem today via the commuter Rail. Famous for the witch trials in 1692, the whole town has a creepy vibe to it. Interestingly, what seems like a dark page in the town’s history that it at one time wanted to forget about, now its seems as though the dark story has become a novelty item that has kept the town prosperous thanks to tourism. We went to a trial reenactment and then through a recreation of the Salem Dungeon that people were locked up and tortured. After that we walked around Salem and got a sense of the town. It is very calm and quiet today because there were big parties here yesterday for Halloween. Robyn and I stopped in the “Soup Factory” for some excellent Lobster Newburg soup and Calm ... read more
