Tonight we anchor in the outer reaches of Boston Harbor. Nobody anchors overnight in the outer reaches of Boston Harbor. Which is very silly of them because it is quite glorious here ... :-)

I first came to Boston Harbor fifteen years ago and got a nice big surprise. First of all, yes, it is big. Boston Harbor consists of a dozen interconnected bays and well over a dozen islands, many of which are managed by the US Park Service. Boston Harbor is home to over ten thousand recreational boats but, except perhaps on a few summer weekends, it rarely feels crowded.

Anchoring here does require some basic skills. The tidal range is eleven feet. There are plenty of places that are open water at high tide but are grass, mud and rocks when the tide goes out.

We have a favorite anchoring spot just off Bumpkin Island. This is one of the islands managed by the Park Service, who have built a nice landing dock where various small harbor ferries drop off and pick up visitors. We anchor just offshore. When the tide goes out, we are in eleven feet of water, which is perfect. In the afternoon, families and fishermen drop anchor alongside but in the evening everyone goes home and we have the whole enormous bay to ourselves. We think we are in Hull ... but we may be in Hingham! In the early evening, small boats rush to and fro in the main channels but rock us only a little. The main commuter fast-ferries do not come through this outer part of the bay.

We left Salem mid-morning and dropped anchor here at 1pm, having sailed up the coast of a glass-smooth Massachusetts Bay.

It is hot, in the upper 80’s, so we lazed away the afternoon and then summoned up the energy to cook a simple (but tasty) dinner.

Tomorrow, we have reservations at Constitution Marina in downtown Boston.

There should be three photos with this blog.

This is where we have been for the “next” few days ...
Wednesday & Thursday, Aug 21 & 22 - Constitution Marina, Charlestown, Boston MA
Friday, Aug 23 - Scituate Harbor MA
Saturday, Aug 24 - Plymouth Harbor MA
