Cumberland, Maryland For such a small town the houses were very grand so to the historic railway station. The ornate buildings, designed in the architectural styles of the time, including Italianate, Art Deco, Beau Arts, Romanesque, and Georgian Revival. We saw George Washington’s Headquarters, Constructed in 1755, the historic cabin was originally a part of Fort Cumberland. George Washington, lived there during the French and Indian War and the Whiskey Rebellion. The cabin was moved to its current location after the destruction of the fort. It is the only surviving building of Fort Cumberland. Another enjoyable trip discovering locations outside of New York with Aaron & Patrick https://www.heygo.com/aaronandpatrick... read more

June: we began day two with a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Breathtaking! A must for everyone's bucket list. After a Trail side lunch we set out for the day. Over a 1900 foot viaduct, over the Eastern Continental Divide, thru a 3,000+ foot, holy shit, railroad black as night railroad tunnel, lots more tunnels and beautiful early fall scenery. We landed in Cumberland, Maryland for the evening. Just for the record, our personal seat adjustment valets, Taylor and Chris had much lighter duty today. Our group of 14 enjoyed a laughter and whiskey soaked dinner at a local establishment. A lot of Buffalo wings and Maryland crabs were sacrificed. All our riders are in good shape after 80 miles. Hitting the trail early tomorrow, hoping it stays dry??... read more

We managed to leave the Walmart carpark at about 6:45am. It wasn't the best place to stay but the Walmart was open 24 hours so at least we had a toilet to use in the morning. Today was scheduled to be fairly long at 126kms each. It will be our longest day before we finish with each of the following 3 days having less kilometres. Significant today was a number of steep climbs that was capped off with a 15km descent at the end of the day. We also crossed into Maryland today. The climbs were as advertised. One at 7kms and 6% and a second at 5kms and 8%. These we expected but it was the numerous other smaller climbs that really sapped the legs. We each climbed in the order of 2000 meters today ... read more

Karen and I left Maine and made it as far south as Carlisle Pennsylvania. We stayed at the Carlisle Barracks Army base which is a sort of living museum and the site of the US Army war college. After a comfortable night we did our morning workout in the same gymnasium where the Olympian; Jim Thorpe trained when he was a student at the Carlisle Indian school. The old building had been beautifully restored with historic photographs of early 20th-Century students lining the walls. We had a good workout but hardly felt Olympian when we left. Carlisle Barracks was a major surprise for us. A wonderful place with friendly people, good location and most importantly a bowling alley where Karen and I each played four games. I keep hitting the Boston pocket and my hook has ... read more
