October on the Maine coast near Bar Harbor
It was moose hunting season in Maine when we left Quebec. Along the way were several weigh stations where hunters were milling about, probably swapping stories about the ones that got away. Nevertheless, there were quite a few moose kills on trailers. In deference to the squeamish, I won’t post any pictures. Actually, I didn’t get the chance to take any, as we were driving in a misty rain the whole time.

We didn’t mind the rain that day, since Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park were clear and crisp the next day. The park was lovely in the fall, and the summer crowds were long gone. We hit the high points of the park and enjoyed a great lunch in the teeny village of Seal Harbor, where we mailed a few postcards.

On the drive to Portland the next day, it rained again. Our plan was to stop in Camden for lunch and a little sightseeing, but we couldn’t find a place to park two buses and tow vehicles. We ended up in a grocery store parking lot, where we got stuck behind a bank with no way to get under the drive-thru canopy. The way around was

blocked by parked cars. In the pouring rain, we unhooked Rhonda (the Honda) and backed up Coco (the bus) in front of the grocery store. It was a little unnerving with cars driving about and people pushing grocery carts. We finally found a spot we could fit in without blocking anyone else. After changing out of our wet pants, we drove Rhonda into town. The rain finally stopped and we laughed about our predicament over lunch at Cappy’s Chowder House.

We spent a couple of days in the Portland area as well, making the trek to L. L. Bean headquarters, the DeLorme map company, a flea market, and a couple of lighthouses. Everywhere we went, we ate seafood and never got tired of it. Next stop, New Hampshire and more leaf-peeping.

Had to stop here just to say we did. Prices were not discounted, and the whole area is now full of outlet stores.
