We have been so busy that I forgot to blog, so here go three days at once. Thursday dawned chilly and damp. Seems we had a storm and cold front blow in overnight. But... since we had been proactive and bought trolley and harbor cruise tickets before storm hit, we bravely put on coats, grabbed umbrellas and headed across Casco Bay into downtown Portland. We had given ourselves a lot of time to get there and find a parking space because the website warned us, and we ended up parked right next to the boat at DeMillos floating restaurant, a converted ferry. So we wandered a few blocks and ended up stopping at the Holey Donut where we picked up a couple of wild blueberry donuts. Really rich, took us two days to eat them. The trolley tour was worth it, We ended up seeing a lot of stuff all over downtown, including Longfellow’s statue, several parks and bunches of architecture, went by a local brewery and then the tour took us to places we had already seen in South Portland where we are staying. Got to see three light houses on our side. Got back to Portland side and had almost two hours before harbor cruise to kill, so went to DeMillos for lunch. Thought we were way too underdressed because it was pretty swanky. Dark wood everywhere, plush carpets and wait staff in evening service dress. Then others dressed like us came in and we relaxed. Lunch was not cheap, but I think our entrees cost less than the round of drinks they ordered. (Hard not to listen in when they were very loud. ) He had Tanquerray and tonic and she ordered a Grey Goose martini, straight up.Then their friends showed up and more drinks were ordered. I would rather be able to taste my food. Harbor cruise was very interesting. Saw a lot of islands, several historic forts and the same three lighthouses from the waterside. Then it got really cold. We tried to stand in the sun but it was really rough and had trouble getting sea legs. Finally went inside and watched world go by in warmth and comfort. We were both glad just to get back to our duplex and relax. Yesterday we headed south to Ogunquit Beach. It was sunny but only 63 degrees. We were amazed by this couple who were walking along in swim wear. They must have beem there for a few days because both of them were burned. She had on a bikini, not a pretty site and the unturned skin was really white. Everyone else on the beach was dressed like us in fleece and long pants. Out of space here, on to next blog.
