The weather was a
little better this morning for our drive and short walks in Acadia NP early in the morning. I love the stone bridges and the carriage paths. It would be such fun to actually ride in a horse drawn carriage in this park, but I'm sure Joe would prefer riding his bicycle. We drove through most of Mount Desert Island that has both parkland and private land, all beautiful. In the town of Northeast Harbor we picked one of the multiple bakeries and had some delicious blueberry scones with our coffee. The people on Mount Desert Island have a nice lifestyle...in the summer. I'm sure most of them aren't there in the winter. We did love Acadia NP and can certainly see why a few of our NPS friends that have worked there loved it so much.
On our way south we stopped at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, quite an unusual bridge.
My brother, Dan, had suggested we eat lobster rolls at "Red's Eats" in Wiscasset, so that was our late lunch stop. We stood in line for 45 minutes at a tiny little shack to get the mother of all lobster
Acadia NP
Sand Beach rolls! They claimed there was more than one lobster for each roll and I swear mine must have had two lobsters on it. It comes on a toasted bun with some kind of buttery sauce and if you are ever in Maine this is the place to go. Now, the heavenly ones we had the other day were a better value for the money, but Red's are just an "experience." Thanks, Dan, for sending us there. Yes, Joe and I are now mainlining this stuff.
We took backroads and main roads today and everything we saw was good. Trees changing colors, small seaside villages too cute to bear, harbors with fancy boats, harbors with old beat up boats, mansions and cottages, deer with bushy white tails leaping through green meadows, and lobster restaurants EVERYWHERE! I was reluctant to ever look down at the GPS on the phone or a map for fear I'd miss something.
In Freeport, we just had to stop and buy a couple of things at the L.L. Bean Flagship Store. That whole town is filled with all the stores we like: Patagonia, North Face, Ralph Lauren...you name it, it's there and all in one
place.
We stopped in Kennebunkport and wondered why we hadn't decided to spend the night there. We drove out to Walker Point to gawk at the amazing Bush compound. There was a guardhouse with a guard in it, so we kept our distance.
We are in the beach town of Ogunquit, ME, for the night staying at a pretty inn run by a young couple trying very hard to do it right. We had a good walk this evening checking out the shops and the beach. We are in Ogunquit because I wanted to walk the "Marginal Way" and we will do that tomorrow morning. All in all, another good day.

Us, too.
We did the Freeport thing, L L Bean, included. I could have spent more time there, but Bob was anxious to move on. We did not do the "Bush thing", thought I would like to have. I have a friend who just moved there last June. She and her husband spent summers up there after retiring and he died two years ago. She said her cottage there is a smaller place and she has so many friends she felt she needed to go there. We are wondering if she will endure the cold winter there. She is so used to Florida for 9 months out of the year. We had great seafood all over New England. Only problem Bob got some clam chowder that made him sick for 24 hours. Love the colors as they develop. Such a great time you have chosen to be there. Love your commentary. Love, Lois
