The plan this year is to head NE into Canada's provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Although we lived our lives in Maine, we have never visited this part of Canada, even though it was relatively close by and The Cat was cruising out of Portland regularly on overnight trips to Halifax. We just never thought about doing it. So, there is no time like the present. Then we will head west in Canada and visit the two remaining southern provinces we have not been to, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Check, check. As I do every year, I give myself a pep ... read more

I'm writing this on Friday, back at home! We considered several options for Monday's activity from Lewiston. Our flight back to NC was not until Tuesday at 10 am-ish from Portland. Baxter State Park where Mt. Katahdin awaits the Appalachian Trail hikers either beginning or ending their long hike; White Mountains in New Hampshire, more of Portland ( hadn't visited all parts of it); drive down south to Kennebunkport and Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge main part; Augusta; Caribou Speckled Mountain Wilderness; Grafton Notch State Park. We went back to Riverview Cafe in Lewiston ( views of the river are photographs on the walls plus a painting on half a wall) where we had enjoyed breakfast on Friday, to enjoy breakfast again before setting out. We then drove to Grafton Notch State Park - the park road ... read more

Anita Prabhu and Aaron Fluellen got married today. Yesterday was the Mehendi meet-and-greet followed by a pizza dinner (and carrot cake)at an Italian restaurant. The Mehendi artist was talented and quite versatile drawing a dragon, a dolphin and other requests by little kids. Good spread of assorted cheeses, fruit(strawberries, blueberries, plums, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple with blueberry and peach yogurt on the side),bruschetta, hummus with pita chips, donuts, coffee and soda. Met Lalitakka and family- Mokki, Yuthika, Prachetas, Tanavi, Rithvik,; Manu, Vaishali; Kavitha and Anita. Anita wore a nice light green sari. It was nice to meet Lalitakka's friends and family members that we had heard of and never seen before. P. J. Nayak and Sunanda were there as also Prabha and Sheshagiri Prabhu. It was so good to see and talk with our friends from Lubbock who had ... read more

Early this morning, after a cup of coffee at the motel ( weak, but not too bad), we visited Bates College campus just to look around. Robert F. Kennedy attended this college. It's a pretty campus with lots of silver birch trees and a pond.the buildings are all brick and all built in the same style, like Wake Forest Univ. buildings. that reminds me, at Scoodic Point, when driving back we spotted a bicyclist with a yellow and black tie-die shirt. Waited till we passed her to make sure it was a WFU shirt and then shouted 'Go Deacs! She smiled back. Saw chipping sparrows, mallard ducks, heard nuthatches and chickadees. Next stop was Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary in Lewiston- about 300 acres of woods of pines, birches, and oaks. Highlight of this visit was a beautiful ... read more
