Up late as it was a restless night with everyone changing beds (except me). I woke first at 8.30AM and got everything charged up again (camera’s, batteries, IPOD’s etc) and updated my diary entries. Nearly 11AM now and still no sign of Luke. Looks like everyone has hit the wall, so we will start today a bit later than normal.
We finally got moving and decided to walk down to the French Markets along Decatur Street.
Had breakfast at some restaurant nearby Jax Brewery at midday which is just alongside the Mississippi River in the French Quarter. Weather is warmer today at around 23 degrees and a bit of a breeze as well. T-Shirts and jeans are the go today.
For breakfast the Luke & Elise had pancakes and Kerry & I had eggs on toast. Kerry had grits on the side whilst I tried to give the crispy American bacon a go. Prices were cheap with all less than $10- but Orange Juice at $4.75 a bit rich. Water is the go in future (sorry they pronounce that warrter down here in the south !).
Kept walking down to the French Market and picked up a
few souvenirs. Luke got some Licence Plates for LA Lakers and The Saints - New Orleans, and Elise got some of the facemasks. Some beautiful photo opportunities around this area
Great atmosphere with bands playing at the Cafe Mundo and other cafe’s and on the street. In the souvenir shops they keep playing the same great music but each time I ask for a copy they keep saying it’s sold out. I asked one lady who is it ? She said it is My Toot-Toot by Rocking’ Sidney (search for it on I-Tunes to get an idea). Tried to buy it at the markets and I guy suggested I buy a mixed artists on CD for $9.99 which had this tune.
After that we caught the Streetcar (aka tram) all the way back to Canal Street and then we decided to check that our hire car with Mr Hertz was set to go for tomorrow’s big road trip to Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.
They offered me a Rav 4 but too small so they will upgrade to a larger SUV that has three rows of seats with more space and only USD$7- extra per day. Cool
!
Next stop was the Louisiana Childrens Museum which cost $30- in total and we spent a few hours here. Luke had fun testing his arm at the softball speed gun (47 mph), whilst Elise had fun pretending to be an optometrist. It was a good place and probably better for younger kids but good for a few hours and then bank to Hotel at Magazine Street.
Kids decided to stay in room as we ordered Pizzas from downstairs. Kerry & I ventured out to Bourbon Street which is full of action with bars / restaurants and brothels too. Much cleaner than I expected and lots of people walking around with the big weekend crowd here for NYE, Saints NFL last regular season match and College Sugar Bowl game between Arkansas and Ohio all in next 4 days.
Had dinner at an Italian Restaurant which was quaint and had Linguini Marinara which was really nice but no seafood just spaghetti and tomatoes ? Kerry had crab cakes. Lots of brocolli to get the vegie mix going, and a glass of Chianti Red which was pricy at $9.50 a glass but good and smooth red wine anyway.
Walked back along Royal Street and saw lots of art galleries and nice hotels. This place is really nice.
Back to pack up the room and suitcases ready for tomorrow as we are about to hit the road.
