After you've done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully. After five years, look at it with suspicion. And after ten years, throw it away and start all over. ~Alfred Edward Perlman, New York Times, 3 July 1958 Welcome back Constant Readers! Some of you might have thought me dead. I am not. Some of you might have thought me injured. I am not. Some of you might have thought me stupid and lazy. This, in fact, I am. There can be no excuse for my long absence, but what I can say is that the past two years have been one of enormous change and growth for me, and that the next two look to be even greater. When I last left you (and I had to go back and ... read more

“Redbud Season” in Kentucky is like “Leaf Peeping Season” in Vermont. Special tours, designated routes, photo ops galore! This is our fourth time to stay at the RV Park at Kentucky Horse Park. Obviously, it suits us. The actual Horse Park will be the venue for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games from Sept. 25- Oct. 10. Equestrians from around the world will compete in eight sports including jumping and a 100 mile cross country endurance ride. The horse park is worth a visit just for the exhibitry, which includes daily live appearances by New York Bred Derby and Preakness winner, Funny Cide, who was born at McMahon of Saratoga, making Joe & Anne McMahon the breeders of record . We had a surprise visit by our great niece and nephew, Madison and Aiden McMahon ... read more

Yesterday we went to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington which was wonderful. We got to see many of the most famous horses of all times and even pet Cigar the horse to make the most money and he made millions before retiring. They were all so beautiful and the place was truly spectacular. Then we drove out to Shaker Village and ate lunch at a Shaker restaurant and toured the grounds. We passed Boone's Cave where Daniel Boone spent a winter. We got into Cave City in the evening and toured Dinosaur World and then had a poolside picnic at our motel. Today we went to Kentucky Down Under and saw the animals and wonderful cave tour there and then we went out to Mammoth Cave Nat'l Park. Then we toured the National Corvette Museum ... read more

Our last day in Hendersonville we hiked nearby Triple Falls in the Du Pont Forest where they filmed the Last of the Mohicans and then we drove out to the area my ancestors settled in the 1700's (Candler, NC named after Zachariah Candler my great grandfather back 8 generations). We found some old family graves I had looked up last year while doing geneaology research. It took hours to find them since they were from the 1700's and not even in a real cemetery---people own the property now that was once my relatives' land 200 years ago and the family plot is unmarked and on the property above a meadow---we had to ask many old locals who sent us from one place to another until finally one elderly lady about 80 years old told me she ... read more

We drove through mostly farmland again from Kansas City, MO to Lexington, KY. We crossed the mighty Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO where the evidence of the swollen river was all around. This is where we were to pick up I-64 from I-70 but we were surprised to find signs telling us it was closed. Karen called the Road Conditions number given her by AAA to get redirected. After a few minutes delay we were back on track toward the familiar I-64 - the road HOME! At 7:00 pm we arrived in Lexington but had to make one more stop at….WalMart. The last provisions stop. The unfortunate thing about a small space is there isn’t much storage room for food for 4 people, so we had to stop frequently for food stuffs. We finally pulled ... read more

Its late, I have been getting little sleep, working lousy shifts and by god I need a vacation... and its Angela's birthday, I have an excuse! Chicago here I come! Left Lexington at five-ish heading to Cincinnati in Angela's electric golf cart, I mean car... Had dinner at an excellent Chinese restaraunt, visited with her brother and sister, took a nap and then off to the bus stop. Megabus is our ride, $13 round trip for two, sure beats the heck out of driving or flying as least as far as the pocketbook goes. (If you have not heard of Mega-Bus it is a really cheap commuter bus with hubs in Chicago, LA, and some place out east...) So at 1:25 am on Sunday July 6th we are on board and squeezed into tight quarters praying ... read more

A beautiful southern style breakfast awaited us in the dinning room.....Yum ! It was a very warm morning, beautiful sunny day. We then went to the Shaker Museum, it is the living quarters and meeting room of the religious Shakers, built in the early 1800's. It is set up as it would of been when the Shakers were there. They left this settlement in the early 1900's. We spent a good morning there, and then wished Marilyn and Tom a safe trip home to Rockford. On our way to Lexington we had a couple of stops at Franklin (Amish area), Bowling Green and Hodgenville (Abraham Lincoln's birth place). By now the temperature had dropped and we had rain. Even in the rain the Kentucky countryside was beautiful.... read more

Lexington, Kentucky Horse Park and Keeneland Race Course Kentucky is beautiful in the spring. Returning to the Horse Park RV Park feels like home. Diner at Le Deauville, in downtown Lexington, is very French and VERY delicious. Niece, Kate McMahon, who sells stallion seasons for Darley Stables, picked up the tab for seven of us (since we all around the table have “shares in mares” I guess we are her clients). Great company, great dinner escargot, moules & frittes, Chateau Neuf de Pape, and so much more! Merci beaucoup, Kate! Sunday is the first time we have seen the sun since leaving Florida almost a week ago - It is a beautiful day for the races at Keeneland. That McMahon hospitality picks up right where Kate left off with Michael having five of us as his ... read more

Today was really early. I’m used to getting up early on Sundays, but usually I don’t have to get 4 children up or rely on someone else for breakfast. I like my Sunday routine and this wasn’t it. But all’s good. We had three morning services, 8:30, 10, and 11:30. Gross. The kids were exhausted by the end of the second show, with another one to go! Yikes! It was the first church we’ve been to where the had cameras and put them on screens, which was also the first time I noticed how much these kids sweat. The 10 was packed, and the crowed was awesome! The other services were mostly full, but the 11:30 still had lots of energy that the kids were feeding off of. After the third service, Kyle came back to ... read more

We sort of got to sleep in today. I guess Ruthie came in around 8 asking Sarah if they were allowed to be awake yet. Vegged. I actually took two naps before going to work. Yea! We finally had a show today! So exciting. Not really a real show, but a church show in a real church. I’ll put pictures up soon. Tonight, I was learning quiet humility as I asked the house techs intelligent questions and getting answered like I had never done lights before in my life. But I was actually good! I just listened and was kind and moved on. The show went well. The us. (How do you spell that word? You know, the first syllable of “usual”?) Use? Usch? That. It was great seeing all the kids today; it seems weeks ... read more
