Back to my weekly blog. This was my last week in Kansas. Next week I will be another day's drive East.
Sunday: Mom was still visiting. We had a more relaxed day between 2 busy days. In the morning we went for a walk at Watson park and I showed her the yellow brick road. In the afternoon we went to the Aviation museum- Wichita is the air capital of the world afterall. In the evening we saw the keeper of the plains fire lighting. My third time and i still enjoy it. This time I saw it from a distance light up too.
Monday: Day trip up to the Flint hills which was packed full of meeting people! First we stopped in Council Grove which was a stop on the Santa Fe trail. We stopped in at the local newspaper and got some tips from a lady who then called up someone who was running for mayor the next day and he opened up a museum for us that is normally closed on Mondays. Unfortunately he did not win the election but he was our personal tour guide. Wild. Unfortunately the high temperature of the day was supposed
to be about 48* and it was windy... so pretty miserable. Next we drove south on the scenic byway and stopped at the Tallgrass National Prairie Preserve. From the looks of it I was super excited but the grass wasn't very tall nor was it very scenic? It's run by the national park service and there is a herd of bison on it somewhere but you'd have to hike many miles to potentially see them. A little bit of a disappointment. Also lol at that bridge over stream in my pictures. We continued south and hit up another historic town with a gorgeous court house we could wander around as well as a lot of closed shops. All late afternoon and early afternoon I was just hoping somewhere would sell a hot coffee... but no such luck on a Monday. Continuing south we stopped at a ranch and event center. Essentially a property that is run by a non-profit and preserves the buildings of an old ranch and rents out the renovated barn for weddings. Again we ran into someoe who became our personal tour guide. We really got the impression we were probably the only tourists in the area
that day! Once back in town we went to a chinese buffet for dinner- mid western chinese food is a bit different with okra, corn nuggets and meatballs on the buffet.
Tuesday: I worked a half day in the morning and in the afternoon we went to Cow town museum- what a difference when it's a Tuesday afternoon, drizzling and 50* versus Sunday afternoon when admission is free and 75* and sunny! If you remember I went weeks ago when Carolyn was visiting 😊 In the evening we went to the game night I attended before and played some games and drank some warm tea with dessert at milk float.
Wednesday: Dropped mom off at the airport early in the morning. Still worked all day. In the evening I was able to check out River City Brewery which we had driven past on Saturday planning to eat at but it was packed with a halloween party. Good bavarian pretzel and beer 😊
Thursday: Had an eventful afternoon at the dog park. Another dog submerged herself in a mud pile then got out of the mud and proceeded to play with copper. So this resulted in an extra
dog bath. Will my dog connect the dots? Playing with a muddy dog or in the mud means you get an extra dog torture session- eg bath?
Friday: Packing and creating the bonus blog on how I pack lol. Spending some time figuring out future travel plans like where I'm going to stay come February. It's interesting always balancing visiting and seeing where you are but also always having to be making future plans like booking accommodations.
Saturday: Did not get an early start... alas I am not a morning person. Beautiful day for a drive. We drove through Kansas city and stopped at Gates BBQ which was delicious. I got a beef nooner. Also stopped by Wooldridge MO which was named for my great-great grandfather. Sadly it's not really a town there is a post office and literally nothing else. Also conflicting population signs 48 on 1 sign and 62 on the other. Got to St. Louis in the early evening and had to pick up my groceries before going to the airbnb (pickup closed at 8pm). Which made for a very full car! Now it's time to explore St. Louis 😊
