Weather: 70s and beautiful States: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas Cities: Williams, Albuquerque, Dodge city, Las Vegas (?) Miles: 995 miles Hours: 14 hrs 45 min Restaurant: Hotel/Home: Fairfield Audible: Resisting Happiness (a couple chapters at a time), Adrift We packed up early and hit the road at 6:30 AM. We had a long day ahead of us. It always seems so impossible to drive these 14 hour jaunts. It is daunting. We just keep ticking off the miles and hours. It is actually pretty cool to pass through towns and down roads across the country that you may have never know existed. The landscape keeps changing. The people keep changing. When you hear about a storm or an event on the news, you can say you’ve been there. You have left a footprint ... read more

Geo: 38.8405, -97.6097Today marks the first day of our return home. It was a major moving day eastward. Because we were losing an hour today, we got up early and left at 7:00 AM and a very chilly 45 degrees. Knowing it would get very warm before the day was over, we were in shorts. Thank goodness for seat warmers. I will say, it didn't take long for the warm-up to begin. By 8:10 AM it was 70 degrees (of course we were moving out of the mountains during this time). By 9:15 it was 86 degrees and an hour later it was 90 degrees. We arrived in Salina, KS at a whopping 97 degrees, so we more than doubled the temperature in just a few hours. Wow!So, we began the day driving east on Rt. ... read more

Geo: 38.8405, -97.6097We had Emily and Lucy stay with us. The hotel had a swimming pool. The girls loved it. And to go to the hotel room, GrandDad put the girls on the "cart". They loved it. Lucy slept on the Pack N Play. It took her longer to go to sleep, as compared to the night before. The girls both enjoyed the FREE breakfast the following morning.... read more

"It seemed like a good idea at the time." That time was a fleeting thirty seconds. "It will be an adventure." The human capacity to rationalise self-inflicted suffering is incredible. "We'll get to see the real America - no one ever goes across the Mid West." There's a reason they are called 'The Flyover States'. "We'll have something to tell the grand kids." We certainly do, here's how it unfolded... Getting to the Greyhound Terminal After leaving Yosemite we took a leisurely drive to Bakersfield and stopped at the 'Vagabond Inn' - an extremely cheap and quite seedy motel on the edge of town. The next day, after hearing the staff unprofessionally talking about each other with their customers over a weird breakfast of 'biscuits in gravy... read more

No likey the mornings. Sally went down to get breakfast and I stayed in the room to watch the sunrise from the opposite of my normal day. So entranced that I forgot to take a picture of it coming up over the historic water tower in Salina. Circa 1999. Sweet view!... read more

Left Dillon at 7 am and 49 degrees, light rain. Kept the light rain all day and the temps stayed VERY unnormal. I expected coolness at 11K feet in Colorado but Salina, Kansas at 62 at 3 pm???? Last time I was thru here the end of July it was 103!! Needless to say the heated grips and Gerbings came in usefui this trip. Also had fog that was similar to the Western Coast. Stopped here for the night at the Ramada which has an Irish bar, It is recommended. They are very reasonable and also have a hot tub and sauna. Obeserved a bunch of riders along the way heading for Sturgis(I would assume). I am just not tiough enough to ride in 50 to 60 degree temps and rain wearing leathers and "do rags". ... read more

Ah, the wide open plains of Kansas! Though we haven't seen Dorothy or Toto, we have enjoyed the rolling hills, expansive fields and unending rows of shoulder-high corn (not as many amber waves of grain as we had expected to see in Kansas, though). In fact, we're enjoying the drive so much we've decided to press on farther than our original intended destination at the kids' urging. Either they really love the car, or they just want some more DVD time. We said goodbye to our family in St. Louis this morning and headed over to Kansas City to watch the Royals play (and unfortunately lose to) the Detroit Tigers. The visit enabled Todd to add one more entry to his already impressive list of stadiums he's visited, and gave us all a good chance to ... read more

Geo: 38.8405, -97.60975/29/12 – We got up early today, but for some reason, we still didn't leave until 8:15 AM. Must have been the time we took to have breakfast. It was 54 degrees in Denver when we got on the road. This was a day for traveling. There is not much to see on I-70 through Colorado and Kansas, so we drove all the way to Salina. And we were told…it is NOT Salina (saleena), it is Sal EYE na. Learn something every day. Anyway, there was not much to take photos of that didn't look like photos I had already taken, so I only have a few. The road eastward from Denver is flat with a capital F. And it boggles the mind that just a few miles west, the mountains rise to 15,000 ... read more

We enjoyed our visit to Salina, Kansas. We found Terry’s childhood home and elementary school (now a district administration building). Graycee enjoyed the nearby park called Indian Rock. Terry’s home looked like a 400 sq foot bungalow. We drove around the neighborhood and downtown Salina as he described all the places he used to walk to or ride his bike. He went to swimming lessons every day at the swim center that is now boarded up (over 50 years old). All the pictures tell the story. The picture of “Lincoln-Roosevelt” Middle School was where Terry went in the 7th grade. It was called Roosevelt Middle School at the time. The high school, Lincoln High, was boarded up behind this building. We grabbed a fresh food organic lunch at a market and ate under a tree near ... read more
