3 STOOGIES
Yes there are four of them.... but wasn't there 4 of them? I chipped in some money to sponsor this team too. On December 20, 2008 Central Harley Davidson had a fundrasier for a local family who had a child die from a Wilm’s Tumor. The medical bills were high and this was a way to help.
So the plan was to get teams of 3 people (young or old) to ride through a set course. Only one team on the course at a time and each team is timed. The dealership had cleared their upstairs warehouse and there was plenty of room for the relays and all the spectators. The cookies and punch provided by the dealership added a sugar fix on the already heightened activities.
The relay was made of 3 segments, the beginning was primarily a zig zag section, followed by a large curve in the second section then the final straight away section. At the beginning of each section a small tricycle was located with a team member. The goal was to move the yellow lei (but I will call it a LAY from now on) from the start to the finish by relaying though the course.
Before the races started each of the participants tried out the trikes and how they would manage to fit.
The tricycles were little, most of the competitors were big. Matching the 2 made for a fun afternoon. The competitors came to have fun, and brought a smile to the spectators before they even mounted their undersized rides. Showing originality in their theme and costume. A couple were seasonal, like the “We 3 Elves” (Pat Beesan, Shirley Deemer & Suzanne Addington) or the “HoHoHo’s” (Willy Bernard, Jerry Waters & Landon Gentry) but then there was “Doggy Style” made up of Scooby Do, Shaggy and the Ghost (Dani Velez, Ben Bruce & Hollywood). Another team was formed by 3 big bad leather clad bikers calling themselves “Fat Kids”. They however did not look very intimidating when riding the tricycles. The Ho Ho Ho’s were a play on words and sported 2 hairy, muscular men in street walkers attire; wigs, high heels and tights. The Ho’s had appropriate and inappropriate areas stuffed with balloons. Competitive though they did have a child ringer, young Landon Gentry. Ho Ho Ho will never seem the same again. The “3 Stooges” (Roger Porter, Loyd Smith & Dick Wells) were also a popular team in their specialty T-Shirts, pajama bottoms and comic antics. Roger Porter dawned a
dark wig to resemble Moe.
The relays were plagued with mechanical failures as the trikes proved they were not built for the size loads they were carrying this day nor were they assembled for the stress they were subjected to. More than once the relays were called to a halt because not even 3 of the 6 tricycles were functional and repairs were needed. Several times participants sprawled the floor as handlebars came out or their center of balance ended up being behind the rear wheels. It was a sight to see HO Willy on his back with his feet spawled and all tangled up in parts of the trike. But the trikes seemed to fall apart for about all the teams. There were 6 trikes and the failures didn't seem to stop until tools were brought up from the service department and the nuts and bolts of the trikes were torqued down.
The relays were a hoot to watch and kept most of the participants and spectators in stitches as the teams tried to maneuver the course. Well done goes to the sponsor of the relays, Central Harley Davidson South and the teams that gave of their
3 ELVES stupid lei.
Want do you do with it to get it out of the way? Make it part of your hair do. time to participate. Who won? Well we were all laughing to hard to care but the time keepers did their job. 1st Place was Team Shaffer (Jennie, Mike & Jeromy). 2nd Place was Team Red (the Gentrys: Tatum, Landon & Jerry). 3rd Place was We 3 Elves.
You can double click on any picture and it will enlarge it and bring the others so you can look at them like a slide show. Enjoy.
