Okay, a little late with this post but whatcha gonna do? Headed down to Indianapolis at the beginning of August to catch the Drive-By Truckers/Black Crowes show, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard Nascar race and, oh yeah, visit my sister and brother-in-law! Haha, I suppose not necessarily in that order... Weekend got off on the wrong foot with both my first and connecting flight departing late (the airline shall remain nameless, however it does rhyme with Bontinental...). This translated in me arriving late to the show, only to sit down and see one dang song of the 'Truckers, not impressed to say the least...good thing we had primo seating and the beer vendors were close at hand... Spent the next day with friends of my sister...they certainly run in some pretty fancy shmancy circles...included everything ... read more

It's July, and the 26-days-til-departure countdown is on! We recieved staging information last night, and will be spending the 26th and 27th in Washington, D.C. preparing for departure with our fellow new volunteers, then heading to St. Lucia on the 28th for our first 3 weeks of training. We'll be living with a family there, and attending classes on health and safety, language and culture, and learning the skills we'll need to do our yet-to-be-exactly-determined jobs while we're there :) After the initial 3 weeks we'll be told where we'll be spending the following 26 months, and head there for another 7 weeks of training. It's a little strange not to know, but kind of exciting too. Peace Corps works in 6 island nations in the West Indies (Eastern Caribbean) region, including 11 islands, one of ... read more

Wow. Goddamn. That was the single best sporting event I have ever seen. Everything pales in comparison. Way too much to tell, not enough words to describe just how unbelievable that was. So I'll just give some quick notes. 1. During yesterday’s game I actually sat in the first row right under the basket. 2. Players like Pau Gasol and Baron Davis kept looking over at me. Me and a couple of guys I met were cheering really loud for the Kiwis and for the guy playing against Vlade Divac. And after one big play for Yugoslavia, Vlade came down the court and stared me down. The Yugoslavian fans did not like it when I was shouting about how inconsequential Divac was. 3. It was so cool because there were so many really knowledge b-ball fans ... read more

Leaving our hotel we headed off for our 4th state Indiana - a Bible state. We had intended to visit more relatives and began to wonder if that was really a good idea but at this stage we couldnt change our plans. We drove towards Indianapolis through more and more dull and disinteresting scenery. On the way we thought we needed to stop for a coffee to break our journey. We saw what looked like a nice 50' s style diner and parked the car. Inside the tables were spread out and laid neatly with red and white gingham tableclothes. The waitress behind the counter was polite and friendly and we ordered a couple of coffees and found a quiet table in the corner. What is it about being in a foreign country that makes you ... read more
