Internet has been scarce, but I'm finally updating. I've concluded Day 2 of the road trip and successfully made it through three states and one time zone. And now I'm in Illinois. I made it to Denver easily enough and my road trip companion and I spent all of Thursday prepping for the trip. We bought healthy road snacks at Whole Foods. We went to Target and I got stuff for my living situation in Maine. We found enough time to pamper ourselves and get manicures and pedicures. I know my nails will just get destroyed once I start work in Maine, but it was kind of a pre-trip bonding activity, and that's what vacations are for. And then the big anticipated departure day came, Friday. And we hit our first obstacle. My companion had suffered ... read more

Up 6am this morning… we didn’t want to miss our flight. It was miserable outside, rain, rain and more rain….. terrible day in Chicago. We dropped the car back at Hertz, we were very pleased with our Chevy Cobalt we did 2328 miles. We checked the luggage in OK, but we both were taken aside for security checks, our hand luggage also got the once over…. My shaker boxes made it through !! We arrived in Calgary after a three and a half hour flight. Collected our hire car, this time a Toyota Yaris…. Tiny….My turn to drive…. So I’m happy with a small car. We took a whirl around downtown Calgary and also to the Calgary Stampede arena. The ground seems to be still frozen, the grass is still laying down and has no colour, ... read more

We loved Chicago!!! What a fun city. We did a lot of walking around and site seeing in our day there. Both of us decided that we'd love to return to Chicago someday. We stayed in this really nice hotel downtown and saw the city at night. It was beautiful. ... read more

Well I had plenty of time in the airport to relax before my flight which was good and the flight was pretty quick. I landed in Chicago and jumped on the train into the city to catch up with Tony Pettit (Uncle Gunny’s Friend) who we had caught up with in Orlando and Ballarat last year with his wife Kath. As I was carrying half my life on my back, we headed back to Tony and Kath’s for a few beers, some tea and TV (watched the Chicago Cubs hit 19 runs to 7 in the baseball game on TV, highest score I have ever seen). It was a good relaxing night to catch up and recover from a big one the night before. On Thursday morning I had a bit of a sleep in and ... read more

By Thursday, the 24th, there was no more business to be had! Nicole, Kassie & I spent most of the day walking around southend districts of Chicago -- near Mag Mile, Wacker street, Milemim Park, Navy Pier, etc. We started off the day with an Architeture tour on the river. Very fascinating. It was 90 minutes of history lesson and architectural visuals! Down by Wacker, there was a camera crew set up filming a Candian Pilot called "Tower". We didn't really recognize any of the stars, but did have a lengthy chat with a 'local' about the neighborhoods, movie stars, and where to go while we're in town. There's tons of movies shot in Chicago, so the stars truly do "walk among us" there! We sent Kassie home that evening... Friday was spent visiting the Chicago ... read more

Today is a long day of traveling, so I probably won't post again tonight. Here is my thought for the day (actually, yesterday). Goodbyes have been hard. Seeing the kids walk in their two lines to a bus going who knows where, and a place I may not be, has not been easy. Last night, we caught the last few worship songs, which were both hymns (so it was sad that Sarah and Kyle weren't there to make fun of me for not knowing them). One of them I knew, sort of, and one of them I had never heard of, but apparently is quite famous. The last verse caught my attention: This is my Father's world, should my heart be sad? The Lord is King- Let the heavens ring- God reigns- the the earth be ... read more

Day two of the convention came & went... we spent the morning at the Career Fair table, then doned the "on the green" shirts and worked the booth in the main exhibition hall. With sore feet & empty stomachs (we missed out on lunch to work the exhibition booth that day) we head back to the Hotel & changed. It was off to do something F-U-N!! Nicole joined up with us at this point -- she had been out & about checking the neighborhood out & taking pictures of the sights already! A little trick to share... one can go up to 233 South Wacker to the Sears Tower & pay the $14+ OR head up to the 96th (?) floor of the John Hancock Tower for a drink in the lounge for $11+! The view ... read more

I apologize for my absence in your lives yesterday. We’re busy finishing shows and getting packed and figuring out who is going where. Yesterday, we had a school show and a real show. Jessica flew in to record the real one. Unfortunately, this was a Union house, so we didn’t have a ton of time to work on getting it all set up because of required breaks and whatnot. The morning show was pretty crappy. The kids were exhausted, the monitors went out in the finale, which is a track number, so they were super flat. Right at the beginning of it, Sarah jumps on Com. “Standby lights. Prossy is in a red t-shirt.” A: What am I supposed to do about it? B: What!?!?! She forgot she had to do the last song and went ... read more

Plane touched down around 11:30am Chicago time... my co-worker, Kassie, and I grabbed a ride to our Hotel downtown. Reserved rooms at a hotel right off the . Chicago boasts a population of nearly 3 million people... and is the 3rd largest city in the US. So there we were, two people in a sea of faces ready to take on the day! Our first journey was to McCormick place where the IEEE convention was taking place. There were literally hundreds of booths & ten times as many people in them or walking the Conference floors. We found Areva, the student poster area, and eventually the Career Fair area (all the way over in the North bldg on 4th floor) to set up for the next day.... read more
