Geo: 43.611, -116.393Hi All - Sean kicking things off here. To be fair, we are going to hike part of the Haute Route; not the whole thing. That would just be crazy :-). However, we are going to be content (and likely more comfortable) with taking in some of the highlights of this historic trek including the tranquil Champex-Lac, the remote Cabane du Mont Fort, the mountain luxury of the Hotel Weisshorn, and (hopefully) views of the Matterhorn from Zermatt where hikers thrive and cars don't drive. After months of planning and preparing, we are off to test our bodies , our minds, and our pocketbooks in a country with world renowned mountains and pricey 2-star hotels. We have put in some training to prepare for the journey in hopes of having a moderate level of ... read more

Geo: 43.611, -116.393Family, Friends, and Parents of Student Travelers - Tomorrow we depart for Costa Rica! Sean and I are very excited to make this first trip to Central America, especially after almost 2 years of preparation for this vacation. The students have worked extremely hard throughout the last school year to raise funds for the trip (we sold a LOT of pizza!), and we're all eager to finally set foot upon Costa Rican soil. Our flight departs Boise tomorrow at 6:30 AM (meaning we'll have to be at the airport at the very early hour of 4:30!). From here, we'll fly to Salt Lake, then to Atlanta, and then into San Jose, Costa Rica, landing at about 8 PM. There is no time change for us (meaning no jet lag--yay!), so we'll enjoy dinner upon ... read more

Geo: 43.5992, -116.424I met with all 5 of our travelers today (minus Sean) and after going over the detailed itinerary, passing out Explorica luggage tags (nothing says "I'm an American tourist" quite like those do!), and dividing up our fund raising money, I think we're ready to go. We fly out at 7:13 AM on Thursday, from Boise to Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany. This will be a 12-day tour, and a first trip to Europe for all of them. We'll cap off our travels in Paris, France with a cruise down the Seine and a parting view from atop the Eiffel Tower. ... read more

I’m sitting at my keyboard exhausted from all the fun we had. It is Sunday night and we have to go back to work tomorrow, but I will be smiling. Who wouldn’t be smiling? We just finished a fab stretch of skiing at one of the world’s best ski mountains. In my previous post I mentioned that we had been miserably sick. We recuperated just in time for Spring Break. The first weekend of our vacation was a three day skiapalooza. The weather was perfect; it ranged from partly sunny to full blown blue skies and sunshine. I also commented previously that our friend Dan is one of the fast guys on the mountain. In addition, he is an excellent teacher/coach as well. He can analyze your skiing and make the appropriate observations ranging from subtle ... read more

I start this post with a little nod to the classic movie Sun Valley Serenade because…well it’s about Sun Valley, Idaho. This spring has been particularly delightful because Beth and I had been extremely sick for a month. We had both come down with some kind of stubborn bacterial infection in the lungs that kept us from skiing for a month. We both recovered just in time for the beginning of spring and a combination of spectacular weather, skiing conditions and a two-week Spring Break. How groovy is that! The post and pictures are a celebration of this time period of several days. I’ve been skiing there since the winter of 1976. I can’t claim to have skied all over the world, but of all the places that I have ever skied (here and abroad); none ... read more
