We are now sitting in the Wallace Inn which appropriately is located in Wallace, Idaho. This is night two (May 20th) of our Bitter Root loop bike trip. We had planned to cycle from Plummer on the Coeur d'Alene (Cda) trail to Mullan, then up over the Lookout Pass to the trail of the Hiawatha and down to Avery , returning to Ste Maries, Id. We have done about 65 miles so far which was over one third of what was intended. However things are unraveling as the Hiawatha trail is still under 5 feet of snow. The new plan is to head back the way we came and return another time to finish the trip. To add insult to injury, the forecast is for rain so our next three days may be a bit less ... read more

It has been 5 months since we blogged last. We arrived back in the US on December 5th and now it is already May 5th. We have grown so much over the past 5 months and really needed a little getaway just the 2 of us. So we headed out for a 5 day/4night escape to Eastern Oregon, Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington. I have had a long time goal of seeing all 50 states by the time I turned 30 but realized when we moved to China in 2009 that I probably wouldn't hit that goal. It is OK though as goals are not meant to be set in stone, they need to change and be able to work with our lifestyles. So instead when I hit 30, I visited my 37th state of Idaho. ... read more

Today we drove out around 9am. We had to stop by my storage unit and load all the rest of the itmes. First on the way to the storage unit I had to take the big truck down a "orange cone" course. Only took out one....not bad. The truck has no power. Dad called me from the truck behind me and told me to press the gas...hahaha...yea like I wasn't doing that. Literally I was going 25 over the mountain pass. Guess I am too heavy. You can actually watch the gas gage move...and when you fill it with Diesel you can actually watch my heart stop when the pump reaches $100.... read more

Coeur d'Alene, Farragut State Park, Sandpoint and Smith's Lake Sat. Sept 5-Mon Sept 7 -- Heyburn State Park was totally booked out for the remainder of the Labor Day Weekend, so on Thursdasy morning we checked the map and found a park further north which had a huge number of campsites, called up the office and just managed to get the next to the last site for Saturday and Sunday. Whenever I'd asked people for advice on where to go in Idaho, they told me Coeur d'Alene, so that was our next destination. To the early French fur traders, Coeur d'Alene meant “pointed heart” and referred to a Native American tribe from that lake region. These days Couer d'Alene is also the name of a large lake and of the bigtime resort area on its northern ... read more

Heyburn State Park, near St. Marie, Idaho Wed Sept 2-Fri Sept 4: As we pulled out of Hells Gate Sate Park, we stopped at the Visitor Center and saw some wonderful wildlife exhibits and a 20 minute video of the travels through Idaho of Lewis and Clark, assisted by the young Indian woman Sacajawea. How on earth they persevered is just amazing to me, up over Lolo Pass and on and on. For those of you unfamiliar with the story of Sacajawea, when she was a young girl, her people, the Shoshone of what is now western Montana, had been raided by another group of Indians and many were killed. She was kidnapped and force-marched east hundreds of miles to North Dakota where she was kept as a slave. When she got older she was married ... read more

Saturday , August 30 Deb & Mikes wedding The sky cleared and the sun came out for the late afternoon wedding. Deb was a glowing bride and Mike a handsome groom. They exchanged their vows on the side lawn with family and friends in attendance. Following the touching and sometimes funny ceremony we moved to the opposite side lawn and enjoyed a wonderful buffet, a great selection of beer and wine and delicious wedding cake. Everyone had a great time. ... read more

Friday August 28 We left Wanatchee and continued our drive across Washington. That afternoon we stopped at the Spokane Airport to pick up Maxanne and Billy. Then we drove on to the Roosevelt Inn in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Inn is the site of Deb and Mikes wedding and is filling up with family members. The city of Coeur d’Alene a city of 40,000 residents sits in the center of the Idaho Panhandle and along the shore of the lake with the same name. It’s the largest city in northern Idaho. Coeur d'Alene was a French name given to the local Schee-Chu-Umsh Indians by early French-speaking trappers in the 1790s. The city’s waterfront is dominated by the Coeur d’Alene Golf and Spa Resort. This fifteen-story lakefront resort sits on piles 5’ above the lake. Lake Coeur ... read more

July 17th 2009 Border guards 101 After a few peaceful days on the artists’ colony that is Salt Spring Island, Auntie Holly and I toddled on back home to Tacoma, Wa. Whilst disappointingly routine - obviously in comparison with our entry into Canada - coming back across the border still required us to explain where we had been and how we knew the people we had visited. I bit my tongue hard before saying something sarcastic which would land me in ho water, but really, is this how countries protect their borders? Does this method really catch out drug runners, traffickers or terrorists? Surely if you were doing something illegal you would come up with and practise a plausible story? Anyway, more importantly, they let us back in the country. A couple more days of shopping ... read more
