I started the morning with a walk to the black sand beach, where it was very quiet (a little blue sky, still, few people) and the turtles were resting. When my companion was ready, we walked down again, so that she could see the beach. We found the ruins behind the lagoon and looked at them. Not a lot online about what they were.

After that, it was all work. We drove to Volcano, found the rental house, left our stuff, then drove to Hilo to pick up the surveys, get the second rental car, then back to the house for a late lunch. Spent the rest of the afternoon in the park, first attending a briefing, then driving around to the different sites to get a "lay of the land". When finished, we stopped by Volcano House to just see it (and the view of the crater).

Then back to the house, where we had a nibbling dinner and watched Jurassic Park (which was very entertaining).
