Traveling day from the Big Island to Waikiki..
Woke at 4:30am odd for a "need to be out of here by 6am" to get to the airport.. We were traveling well and had put through two loads of washing (as required by the apartment).. Had some breaky and said farewell to the most amazing place to stay - don't go think this was a modern abode - no, think of Nan's old wooden kitchen cupboards where the drawer falls down when you pull it out and the little vent circles in the doors.. BUT it was PERFECT.. would stay there again in a heartbeat.. We even looked at property here - the apartment above us was for sale - just under 500K.. anyone want to buy in - 8% giving you one month a year in paradise? Dream on huh?
Anyway, the three boys were done and downstairs in the car - I was just finishing up the last load of washing and emptying the fridge, then it was my time to go.. Remember it's still dark at this stage. I turned off the kitchen lights and with my camera bag on my back (damned heavy) and hat, sunnies,
phone in my hand headed for the door... God damned little steps.. missed them completely didn't I in the pitch black and went down in a HEAP.. the immediate pain had me dizzy, sweating and not in a happy place, I couldn't get up so all I could do was lie down on the cold tiles to try and stop the shock.. I laid there for about 10 minutes before Grant barged through the door saying "what are you doing", then he saw me on the floor.. I told him I couldn't get up and he helped me to the bed and put the fan on.. grabbed me an ice pack and a drink.. I stayed there long enough to start feeling a bit better, though still in pain.. He helped me to the car and through tears we made it to the airport via the car rental place to drop off the car.
Arriving at the airport we managed to check in and then going through the security checks there was a minor issue, the frozen gel pack that I had been using on my foot couldn't go through.. Well, that did me - burst into tears and
they told us that I would need to have a full bag search and pat down in order to take the gel pack on the plane. I wasn't going to say no.. there was no way they were taking the gel pack off me..
We got on the plane and one of the air hostesses gave me a bag of ice and a towel - by now my foot was bruising and swelling - thankfully it wasn't a long flight.
Arriving at Honolulu we made our way through and to the car rental depot via a shuttle van.. Had problems at the car hire place because the car they had assigned to us had a screw in the tyre along with multiple scratches and dings - the problem being they didn't allow an inspection / sign off on the existing damage - meaning that we could have been stopped and charged for it on our return - even though it was not our damage. So Grant had a bit of a tanty and due to the screw in the tyre we were assigned another car - still unable to have any damage signed off, we went round the
car and photographed any damage - hopefully would help if any questions came up later.
From there we traveled to Waikele outlets - had some breaky and found a pharmacy to get some help with the old cankles and bung knee from the fall.. The pharmacist said to lay off the ice - his take was 10 minutes every hour max, gave me some ibuprofen, and a few bandages to strap up my bad bits. He said elevate and rest was the key.. So instead of doing all the outlets, I just hobbled round a few.. Didn't buy anything at all - wasn't in the mood, but the boys purchased a bit - the Vans store copped a hit - 5 t-shirts, 4 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of shoes - under $90AUD.. Pretty good value..
Anyway, from there we traveled to Grant's surfboard factory in an industrial area - he got a board from here last time and was really happy with it so went back for another - $450 for a board here.. He's pretty stoked and out on it right now..
Made our way to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and managed to get our
luggage to the room for our one night stopover. My foot was turning a nice shade of blue by now and besides making my way downstairs for a welcome drink with Renee, Brad and the kids, and for the boys to have a swim at the beach / pool.. I was room bound.. Grabbed a bottle of wine, Grant went out and got a pizza, pillows under my legs / feet - I wasn't going anywhere..
