A few pictures from our 2 weeks, 3 islands, December trip to Hawaii. First: Oahu. We spent 3 days mostly in Honolulu, hiking the remains of an old, dormant, volcano Diamond Head, exploring downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Forgot to take pictures of Waikiki, however, all other parts of Honolulu are much more interesting. Also forgot to take pictures of malasadas, which are delicious Portuguese donuts filled with all sorts of cream, and not so delicious poi, i.e. mashed taro root. Most impressive was poke, raw ahi tuna (basically sashimi) with spices, which I still crave. Delicious!... read more

North Shore!! Yay, we finally made it to the R&R point of the holiday.. Slept till 9 or so, well I did, the kids were up and the boys had gone down to Pipeline..Taj got me toast and it took me 15 mins to get up 10 stairs.. pain kicks in when it's been resting.. Not much to tell really, Renee and I done some domestics and generally lazed about.. About 2 the gents came home from pipeline.. Mick Fanning is still in the lead but only by 200 points.. Close!! We then headed down to the Local Farmers Market - we had fish tacos and a glass of vino for a late lunch (for some reason lunch is always late on Hawaii time!).. We purchased veg and fruit, local mango salsa and dips, general yum ... read more

I ran out of time the first time I made it to Pearl Harbor to check out the USS Bowfin , so made a trip back to Pearl Harbor this day to see it. While it is cool to see one of these remnants of World War II, it is a quick tour and was USD $12 on my visit. There is only one deck within the sub to view, so it won't take much time to check it out, from the torpedo tubes in the bow back to the torpedo tubes in the stern.... read more

After an 8 hour flight from Las Vegas, we arrived at Honolulu airport, Hawaii. We had booked a transfer to the hotel from the airport, so we kept an eye out for our driver. We found our driver, Tony, pretty promptly, and he took us to his car... a stretch limo! He brought us through Honolulu to our hotel, on the way telling us where to go, what to do and where to eat. He was full of great advice. The Hilton was a very nice hotel, not as nice as the Bellagio but still very plush! We got to our room and completely flaked. We ordered food to the room and watched Jurassic Park on the TV. When we mustered up some energy we went down to Waikiki Beach and sat in the sun for ... read more

Geo: 21.3069, -157.858It's our second day in Honolulu and we have no plans for today. Not that there aren't things to do. It's just that Mom doesn't feel like running around today and she has her own plans. She needs to get laundry done. Now we brought seven suitcases full of clothes and the ship will wash and fold our Landry for $15. Apparently, Karen likes to do laundry and is looking forward to spending a relaxing day in Honolulu doing just that. And who wouldn't. I've figured it out. All these people we see at the airport come from all over the world bringing suitcases full of dirty clothes just so they could wash them in Hawaii. What else is there to do here? So after a light breakfast, I work on the blog while ... read more

Geo: 21.3069, -157.858We arrive in Honolulu at 8am but since we have no structured activity planned, we have a leisurely breakfast and leave the ship about 10am. Today Mom is armed with two candy bars and a banana to ward off any sugar attacks. We decide to go to the Waikiki area to look around. Mom has a shopping list for a CVS type store if we come across one. We decide to catch the bus just outside the port. After several unsuccessful attempts to locate the correct one, we board the 42 which takes us a few miles into Waikiki. Seniors 65 and older ride for $1 and since I'm carrying my Medicare card, I'm in. Mom and this senior foreigner are not so lucky. The bus driver lets Karen go for $1 but once ... read more

Come to Hawaii and relax on the beautiful beaches of Waikiki goes the advertising blurb. I have yet to lie on the sand and have swum 3 times only at Waikiki, seems like a waste of a holiday to do just that, there is so much to see and do. Today's early morning start involved a 7am out of bed, breakfast and catch the green trolley line to the Diamond Head Crater to hike to the summit. Our stop to catch the trolley was opposite the zoo and the beach where we watched one seriously good game of beach volleyball, 2 couples who looked quite professional. The green trolley takes you up to the gate where you need to pay your $1- to access this national park. It was made a national natural landmark in 1968, ... read more

We got up early in eager anticipation of a trip to Hanauma (pronounced ha-now-Ma) Bay and the promised best snorkelling in O'ahu. Our roomies next door decided to monopolise the shared bathroom from 6-30am to 7-30am so we eventually got into the shower and downstairs (4flights) for cereal and banana around 8am. We were told to walk up the street to catch TheBus #22, because if you get it closer to the our stop near the zoo it would be full and this was the best piece of advice we had all day.We boarded it way up Kalakaua Ave up past the Moana Surfrider, in the direction heading towards the zoo, and managed to snare the last two seats. By the Waikiki Aquarium stop we had loaded about 60 plus people on the double bus, we ... read more

Amazingly with all the noise of the next door Queen Kapiolani Hotel parking, valet and luggage areas as well as various construction work nearby we managed a sleep in and Martin slept till 9-30am. Our plan today was to take the blue Waikiki trolley on the South East corner tour of the island. We thought 11am would be great, however after a slow lazy morning we managed the 1-36pm departure. We chose to get this double decker bus at its third stop which is at the Duke statue along Waikiki beach. After some very assertive lining up we managed to get a seat on the top facing the coast. This is a 2.5 hour round trip, with informative commentary and two stops for photos. You can pay a single $20- fee or purchase a multi line ... read more
