Cloudy - 75F
Today is not starting out well. Not because of any occurrence but simply due to the fact that we slept until 9:30am. With no shore excursion scheduled, we had little incentive to rise early other than the reality that they stop serving breakfast at 10:30am. "Hurry! Get dressed. We have only minutes before they shut down the feeding trough." Oh, what have we become? Racing upstairs for what? An egg, piece of toast and some Rice Krispies? Well, coffee too. But it's a cruise ship and we struggle over the little things, like front row seats at bingo, reserving the lounge chair right in front of yours, just to preserve your view of the pool or bringing our own wine to the lounge shows, depriving the ship of $16. This is what keeps the senior community alive!
Quiet and uncrowded, the lush, green island of Kauai is known as the "Garden Isle." It is home to spectacular cliffs and canyons. The most popular shore excursions visit Waimea Canyon (called "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific"), the Fern Grotto, the Hanalei Coast and the Na Pali cliffs. We've already done Waimea Canyon & Fern Grotto
the last time we were here in 2015 and the second two aren't available on Sundays as the parks are closed at some of the sites. We could just rent a car and drive around, stopping at the local Walmart like some passengers do but we elect to remain on board, having our usual tiny breakfast followed by a stroll out to the "Adults Only" pool astern. Of course it's adults only. There's only 14 kids under 18 aboard this 2600 passenger ship. Still, there's no one in the pool but the cloud cover today in Kauai dampers Karen's desire to swim. Maybe tomorrow. Now we check out the spa and gym. Karen wants to get some nail work done and we have a $50 coupon to use by today. Somehow I feel that it's not the best deal for me. She makes an appointment for 5pm this evening and we retreat Deck 5, the Atrium. Here she uses her coffee card for a latte and a free hot chocolate for me. This time the barista on duty is the coffee manager himself and he makes certain that her card is punched, leaving 13 more stars to punch out. The
guy that never punched the card before is nowhere to be found. The jig is up. I still get my free hot chocolate though. Hopefully, our buddy at the coffee shop will return to give us free coffee. Unbelievable as it may seem, we now return the Lido buffet for a small green salad and lemonade. This should push me over the 400lb mark.
Our schedule today is brutal. Returning to our room to watch the Raider game at 3pm, we hang there until her nail appointment at 5 o'clock. While she goes to the spa, I consult with the future cruise lady about possibilities for next year, then retire to the library to type this blog and wait for Karen to return. What's that visit to the spa going to cost? Not bad, I hear. $69 less the $50 coupon leaves only $19. I like it. Stopping by our room to drop off some stuff, we head up to the Lido tonight for dinner. The menu in the dining room isn't all that and it's 7pm, late for us. We just have a quick snack and return to our room to watch two episodes of Dateline. No news
on the Raider game final score. That's all for now. Tomorrow, Lahaina, Maui and we have plans there.
