Doesn't it sound hardcore? Well, it wasn't so bad... We're alive... and so is the four year old kid we also saw clambering over the cliffs, so no need to worry! The pictures speak for themselves, so we'll let them do most of the talking... To sum it up: it was 25 miles (40kms) of cliff-side hiking through dense jungle, over sheer, rocky cliffs, and to a semi-permanent "hippie-colony" where naked people let it alllll hang out - a great hike, spread over four days. We were a little worried about it - The Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali coast - seeing its 9/10 Sierra Club difficulty ratings, and words used to described it including: treacherous, challenging, grueling, "one mis-step could be your last" etc - but it was not nearly as worrisome as we ... read more

In the morning, I took off to the lighthouse because Judy said it was her favorite quiet place on the island. It's just on the North Shore -- can't miss it. It's also a bird sanctuary. I saw my first Albatross. It flew up with it's big feet and then flew down back into its nesting area. There were huge waves that day and breaking on the rocks about forty feet high! The volunteers there who told you about the place were really nice and one took a picture of yours truly looking from the ocean to the shore. Not long after Kyle recovered from his sightseeing, we all went down to the beach. After walking around and looking at all the living coral that had washed up from the HUGE waves, Alan and I did ... read more

So here's a photo of the bookstore in Hanapepe and there was another author there. Her name was Anne Dimock and she wrote a book called "Humble Pie." By gosh, a famous book indeed. It's all about pies and one night she had tiny pies for the customers to sample. (All I could offer were invisible pieces of the ocean.) Anne's also a playwright, originally, so we had a lot to talk about and we made pie and playwright-type jokes in between signing our non-fiction books. When Anne isn't signing books, she's checking out huge outriggers as part of an outrigger team on the island. We both sold out of our books and then got leid by the bookstore owners which means -- fragrant plumera flowers all around our necks. Ed and Cynthia, the bookstore's mellow ... read more

Like I've said, with travel, I'm working with this: I go where I'm invited. So I was doing CST work in Chicago earlier this year on the invitation of a fine fellow that I'd met in Florida at Trump's by Gosh "Mar a Friggin Largo", named Alan. Alan invites me to Chicago and then to Kauai with his Bros. Here's everybody in Kauai right now. We're on the North Shore. It's very cool here. (Some rain.) Alan sent me an email about some places in Kauai to present the book. We had an event at the Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe on Friday the 6th and will have another on Friday the 13th, from 6 to 9 PM. It's a very cool book, "Touch the Ocean: The Power of Our Collective Emotions," and Kauai just dances ... read more

This morning we board the bus a little earlier so we can get to the Kilauea Lighthouse National Wildlife Refuge before it opens to the public. Susan has arranged (connections )with the rangers there for our bus to enter before the park is open. When we arrive at the gate we see there are 3 cars lined up waiting to get in. We are 1/2 hour before opening time, and Susan says there will be a long line when we leave. Two Rangers greet us with their model of the Red Footed Booby. They explain the National Wildlife Refuge and Kilauea Lighthouse point to us. We got to go inside the lighthouse ( built in 1819), but not up into the lamp area because of construction there. Then they let us wander around the refuge on ... read more

Another early start was required because arrangements had been made at Kilaueia Lighthouse National Wildlife Refuse for us to get in early. That way our group had the full attention of the staff. We had an hour before they had to let the others in. Fortunately, our eager beavers were on time and stayed within the time frame we had. Our old bus rolled in before the disbelieving eyes of tourists waiting to enter the refuge. We were greeted by the staff who split us into two groups. They explained the birds whose refuge here is nearly unique in the world. We were able to see them with binoculars. Again Marty reports well in her blog: http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/Hawaii/Kauai/Hanalei/blog-375371.html The lighthouse is no longer functioning but there are electronic beacons next to it that continue to serve planes ... read more

May 30, 2008 - I can't believe I'm just now posting these pictures. The trip happened back in March, but it's taken me awhile to pic my top 200 pictures, to load all the pictures onto the site, tag them and rearrange. I would have just loaded them into Kodak Gallery or something, but I had already written this blog, so I didn't want it to go to waste! This is more of a blog site than a picture site, so I'll probably need to move to a different website that's easier for me to load so many pics onto - if anyone has any recommendations - let me know! Maybe I just need my own site.... Anywaysssss - I had an amazing time in Kauai - it's one of the most beautiful places I have ... read more

"Come, my Unatapees!" Barking ensues. "Come, babies. Puna, come. Beta." The barking turned into growling. "Puna, beta! Beta, Puna!" And yapping. "Puna, get your ass back here!" That meant it was about 7:15 a.m. I had set my alarm for earlier and had ignored with the same goal-driven decisiveness. This was Waimea Canyon morning. This is the day I intend to find and trip on mushrooms. Not attempt-- I intend today. Already, we wake up in unchartered terminology. Searched for water in the tent and then immediately back to the air mattress. I was glad we hadn't left for Waimea now, although later we would have to consider daylight, so later would suck more than waking early did. And I could live with that now. "Puna, beta! You're a fucking dumbass. Why you have to ... read more

Post by Ryan: Aloha everyone, welcome to our first post. It would have been here sooner but its not easy finding free internet here on Kauai so we had to finally break down and pay for the day. Things are going great, the condo is awesome with a view overlooking the ocean and the beach just a short walk away. Our days have been very relaxing, wake up whenever, have some coffee and read while looking out over the ocean. Lay out on the beach for a few hours, have some drinks, watch some TV and repeat. We also decided to at least be a bit active and went on a little hike overlooking Hanalei valley and checked out some waterfalls until we got rained on and headed back. My relaxation ended Tuesday and Wednesday when ... read more
