Our walking tour began at 10 AM and lasted about 2 hours. The guide was very informative and had lots of interesting facts about Savannah. It was a small group of 9 people so.easy to hear what was said. Savannah was established in 1733 by James Edward Oglethorpe and a group of English settlers. The historic part of the city (the largest in the US) is designed around 21 squares with housing on 2 sides of the square and service and administrative buildings on the other 2 sides. The predominant tree is the Live Oak which at this time is dropping pollen to the point that it could be scraped up with shovel. Savannah and surrounding areas are known as the Low Country. Savannah grew to be a bustling port with architecture reflecting a wide variety of styles. It was at the end of the Civil War considered to be the prize at the end of the Union Army's "March to the Sea". After the walking tour we continued to explore the various squares and then headed down to the riverfront. We had intended to go to Tybee Island but the traffic was backed up so we stopped at Fort Pulaski which is the oldest standing brick fort in Georgia. It was built in the second quarter of the 1800's and took 18 years to complete at a cost of $1million. Today they demonstrated the firing of a field gun at the site. Tomorrow we will head south probably into Florida. The weather looks like it may be getting cooler with the possibility of rain which we haven't seen since the end of March. Today I enjoyed a swim in the outdoor pool at the hotel. The temperature today was 86 degrees,
