Today we decided on a diversion up into South Carolina to Hilton Head Island. This is a recreational/retirement area just north of Savannah. In the past the area could only be reached by boat and was the site of a couple of working plantations and a few cottages. Since then a causeway has been built and the island is composed of resorts, shopping, golf courses and several gated communities called plantations. Although there are 12 miles of beach, only a small amount is public. It appears it is Spring Break time for some people considering the young people on the beach. There is also a golf tournament at a course within one of the retirement communities. We have now travelled from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Leaving the island we went through Bluffton which again is a continuous strip of retirement communities, golf courses and shopping. This area and the island are quite affluent areas. From here we headed back south to Savannah where we have booked a walking tour tomorrow morning.
