After much ado, the blog is back…
The last few weeks have been busy, both Hope and I working as well as two trips (2 for me, 1 for Hope) to Florida to visit the Villages, where my Grandparents live. Hope also took a trip to SC to visit her family.
The adventure we took together to Florida was a lot of fun. We were able to spend time with my cousin Rachel, her friend Beth, Uncle Dan and Aunt Teresa. Our schedule was booked solid with sipping cocktails poolside and zipping around the retirement community on their top of the line golf cart. One afternoon we hopped in the Stang and headed south to Lakeland to catch the Detroit Tigers opening of spring training. The Tigers destroyed Florida Southern 14- 0 and we had access to the team only found at Joker Marchant Stadium. Both Hope and Rachel encountered the rookie stars of last year’s team in the concourse. Hope picked up Joel Zumaya’s autograph and Rachel got Justin Verlander’s.
Just this weekend we experienced St Patrick’s Day 2007, Savannah GA. As you may know, this year it was held on a Saturday which meant even larger
crowds for this Madres Gras-like celebration of green beer, bag pipes, corned beef, cabbage, beads, and tacky green clothing.
Speaking of green clothing, Hope spent most her free time leading up to the weekend shopping for our outfits. For me she found a green shirt that read:“Spring Break Kazakhstan. It’s Nice!” I had no idea what a hit this shirt would be; through out the day I exchanged dozen of lines from the Borat movie with strangers on the street. Hope’s outfit included a leprechaun type jacket and a stylish, shamrock belt buckle with a beer bottle opener built into it!
Hope’s cousin Jay and his girlfriend Emily came into Savannah Friday night and we hit the hay early in order to get up and maximize our St Patty’s Day events. Saturday morning started at about 6:00am with a huge breakfast of turkey sausage, egg whites with spinach, and beer. Between our breakfast, pre-brought snacks of peanut butter sandwiches/protein bars and dirty treats of sausages, gyros, and fries we were able to keep from getting too sauced up while having a great day.
We headed to the mall in order to take the trolley downtown. Hundreds of
people were lined up to take the shuttle and from there we knew the party was, if nothing else, huge. Crowds were numbered around half a million despite a chillier than expected day. Highs were around 60 and the early morning was cool for sure. The parade started at 10am and lots of people had been camping out since 6pm the day before. We didn’t care to watch the old timers in green blazers and kilts walk down the street so we bar hopped to test the scene. People were filing in throughout the morning, but the crowds didn’t come close to the late afternoon or evening shift. The majority of our day was spent on River Street where we went in and out of several bars while also enjoying the street festival. Activities included live music, both bag pipes and drum line bands and some rock acts. Also Spike TV had a live eating contest event where the Black Widow (who is a 100 pound woman) ate some 11 pounds of corned beef. She made me feel better about the three brats I ate.
Jay and I competed in one of those inflatable joust games. When I say
“competed” I mean we didn’t follow the rules, Jay tackled me and we wrestled on the inflatable ring. After we stopped the man shut the whole thing down and we ruined it for everyone else. I guess they shouldn’t give drunk dudes an opportunity to beat each other and expect them to act like mature, accomplished adults.
The rest of the night was spent in a sport’s bar/dance club called Malone’s. By that point lines to get on River Street were hundreds deep and getting into a bar took at least half an hour. Around midnight, after tons of beers and calories, we hopped on a bus and headed back to our apartment to sleep off the great time we had. Despite all the carrying on, we all had a safe and fun St Patty’s Day.
