Stone Mountain GA – Jeffersonville GA
Jail Creek Winery
Day 39
From Stone Mountain we are making our way to Savannah GA, which is only a five or six hour drive and we could easily do it in one day, but why rush? We started out this trip planning on driving no more than five hours a day. We have not only kept our drive times under that most of the time it has been under three hours.
The drive from Stone Mountain to Savannah would take about five hours so we decided to take two days to get there and stop at a Harvest Host for one night. It also gave us time to stop at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.
This was our first visit to a Presidential Library and we found it very interesting. Irrelevant of which side of the political spectrum you are on, it was very interesting to see the path that took him from growing up barefoot on a peanut farm to becoming the 39
th President of The United States.
Getting to the Library was very interesting. Mark &
Karen were leading the way, and my GPS started beeping STOP LOW BRIDGE. The height of our motorhome is 12’10”, and the GPS said the bridge was 10’. We were lucky that the center of the bridge was much higher and only the right lane had a 10’ restriction. Once we arrived the parking lot we were in had had spots for cars, and between the two motorhomes we would have taken up most of the spots. I was trying to find where the bus parking was, when a security guard came over to direct us to the right lot. Getting to the lot requires a couple of sharp turns, and low hanging branches. Getting out of the lot when we were done was not any easier. Apparently the directions the guard gave us had us coming into the lot backwards, making the exit just as challenging.
Leaving the Library we headed to Jail Creek Winery our stop for the night. Jail Creek Winery lets RVers to “camp” on their property. You must be fully self-contained, and can only stay one night. We parked in a filed next to their store. Other than being very very bumpy,
and full of fire ant mounds it was a great location.
It was a very enjoyable low key stop. During the afternoon we were the only customers there, in the evening a couple more did show up. Most of their business is on the weekends, and I think the y are open during the week is because they are there making wine and rum. They also make bourbon, but theirs will be finished aging for a few more months. They have only been in business for about 18 months. Our favorite wine was their sweet peach wine, and Angel and I shared a bottle of it.
One of the down sides of Harvest Host, is there are no services, while we are very self-contained; with no cell service we had no internet. Luckily Mark & Karen have Starlink satellite internet and when we are right next to them, we can use that.
Our next stop is Savannah GA.
