Friday, September 30, 2022 We left at around noon from our home in Tennessee and made the 3 hour drive down to Helen. It was an absolutely beautiful drive. Despite the threat of rain coming from the remnants of a hurricane, we didn't see a drop of rain. In fact it was sunny and beautiful for the entire trip. The drive down took us past Tellico Plains and through the Smoky Mountains down to the small Alpine village of Helen, GA. It looked more of Bavaria then Georgia, especially with the many people dressed for Octoberfest in lederhosen and dirndls. It is a quaint town situated a long a river and nestled in the Georgian Blue Ridge mountains. Our condo was situated right on the river and within walking distance of everything in the small town. ... read more

Surprise, surprise, we woke up and we were not sore. Today we decided to hang around Helen, GA and check out Tallulah Falls. I did find out about a place called Brasstown Bald. It is the highest point in Georgia and it is about 19 miles from Helen. You can drive up there but the information center is closed. We had not made plans to go here today but I thought I'd pass the information along. Today was a nice, easy day. Since it was Sunday morning, and we were only traveling about 100 miles, we could afford to sleep in a little. Besides it was pouring rain, and we needed to wait a bit for it to subside. So by the time we finally got out of bed, it was about 7:30. After a quick breakfast at the hotel, I checked the tire pressure and it had only dropped to about 35psi. So a quick hookup with the air compressor, and we were up to 42psi in a few minutes. By 9:00 we were on the road. Since we were only going about 78 miles according to my MapQuest map, I decided to play it lazy and just leave it up to the Garmin lady. The Garmin lady path was a ... read more

Well, Helen did not disappoint us this year! The weather was incredible; sunshine, comfortable temperatures in the 70's and beautiful fall scenery. We pitched our tent at Unicoi State Park and this was our hub. This particular state park offers so much for those who enjoy the outdoors. Travelers will find hiking, canoeing, fishing, tent and RV camping, rental cabins and a lodge. Unicoi is conveniently located close to the Alpine village of Helen and those who enjoy a nice walk through the woods can hike the trail into town. Once in Helen, there is an abundance of things to do. Stroll along the main street and take in the many specialty shops or stop for a nice meal along the way. There are some wonderful restaurants such as Paul's or the Cafe International that sit ... read more

Fall is in the air and we have one last camping trip planned for the year. We discovered Unicoi State Park by chance in the summer of 2009. The rolling hills and scenic beauty made us fall in love with the area. Additionally, we discovered the Alpine village of Helen to be the most quaint and charming town in North Georgia. We knew then and there that we wanted to return in the fall to see the beauty of the colorful leaves and to experience Oktoberfest! We had a wonderful time last year and even made some friends while camping in the park. We are returning again this year and meeting up with our camping friends we met there last year for a fun filled weekend. Oh and did I mention Oktoberfest?! Yes, the town of ... read more
