Motorhome & " Toad "
Getting ready to drive off in our "rolling tent" Due to the fact that we are starting this blog a few months after the purchase of our first motorhome, Norm and I want to catch you up briefly on our past trips.
Inaugural trip - Our very first foray in the luxury world of "non-tent camping", was immediately after taking delivery of our 32' rolling hotel room. Because we realized we would have many unanswered questions ( or we would have forgotten )we decided it would be prudent to venture as far as the back lot of the Dealer to spend the night, in order to try out all the different systems. Most of the next day was spent getting what we needed to tow the car, then set off to drive about 15 miles to our favorite mountain bike location in Ocala, Fl where they also had a handful of sites. So exciting ! We set up while checking our notes, watching a video on the iphone, and cooked dinner. We then had a great time playing with all the buttons and switches, and met our first of hopefully many friendly co-campers who, coinsidentally had the very same motorhome only an earlier model. They were very shared
with us a few tips and brought to our attention that the manual has much more user information than we could have imagined!
After our first sucessful night ( anytime, we understand, that nothing is broken, is a "sucessful" trip ) we packed up and brought it to our rented storage facility.
Girls Night Out The next week, my daughter, Jennifer and I took the RV out for the night by ourselves! I was pretty nervous setting up the camp, and backing it into the site by myself was pretty scary, since Jennifer had not arrived yet. The actural driving of this huge rig was really not too intimidating due to the experience I had had in the past towing a horse trailer. We had a great night together, with no problems other than discovering the propane connections had a leak. The next morning I did the most intimidating of tasks- dump the holding tanks! I figured it out, and off we went to return it to the storage facility. Wow - I was very proud of myself!
Pine Mountain, Georgia The next trip was to Pine Mountain, Georgia with The Villages RV Club. What a group of kind and friendly people! They all came up to meet us, and welcomed us into their group. Many were very generous with their time to give us different tips of proper usage and maintenance, and were happy to answer and questions we had.
Happy Hour, we discovered, was an integral part of each evening's activities. Boy, this group sure loves their Karoke! The majority of the singers actually had a pretty good voice !
During this five day event, we visited Callaway Gardens, golfed their fabulous course, hiked the mountains and went as a group to a couple of restaurants. On the way home, Norm and I spent many hours visiting the National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, Georgia. Very Fascinating.
Amelia Island, Florida Since Norman had to attend a conference for work in Amelia Island, Florida, we decided it would really be a good idea to get another week of using the RV " under our belt". We stayed at Fort Clinch State Park which was a very beautiful park, situated on a peninsula that has the Intercoastal Waterway on one side, and the Atlantic on the other. There is huge Fort built in the early 1700's at the end. There are two very different camping areas here. One side is very open, and actually on the sand, with a huge sand dune between the sites and the Atlantic. The other, which we opted for, is very heavily treed with old Florida Oak Trees, and its characteristic drapping Spanish Moss. I wish now that I took pictures to post. Next time.
Norm left each morning ( I often drove so I could shop ) at 6:30 AM, and would be done at 1:00 PM. The afternoons were spent a bit lazily - resting, organizing the RV, biked to the beach, watched and talked to people fishing during a gorgeous sunset, and hiked to the Fort, and learned about the history from the volunteer folks in Period Costumes.
One day after class, Jackie, Norm's daughter came with her fiance to play golf, come to the campgroud for dinner, and catch us up on all the latest news! Other than the rain that we arrived in, the weather was fabulous! High's in the 80's, no humidity, and a wonderful cool breeze. It was so lovely, we stayed an extra day.
We left the next morning with no problems! You would think we've done this for years!
